GAME NOTES: The Greyhounds of Loyola Maryland try to log their fifth straight home win against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foes today as they face off against the Niagara Purple Eagles at Reitz Arena in Baltimore. On Thursday night, the Greyhounds defeated Saint Peter's at home by a score of 81-69, marking the seventh win in the last eight games for Loyola, which beat the Peacocks twice during that span. As for the Purple Eagles, they were in action two nights ago versus Rider and were taken down by the league-leading Broncs in an 80-76 decision in the Garden State. The loss was the second in the last three outings for Niagara, which is now 8-5 in MAAC play and a game behind the Greyhounds in the standings. With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, Niagara leads by a count of 27-14 after posting an 83-79 victory over the Greyhounds earlier this week in New York.
Charron Fisher had another big game for the Purple Eagles two nights ago as he tallied a game-high 30 points on 13-of-27 shooting from the field, but his efforts fell short of keeping the squad out of the loss column against Rider on the road. Fisher added a team-best 11 rebounds as well, while Tyrone Lewis turned in a 26-point effort on 5-of-11 shooting behind the three-point line. Stanley Hodge tacked on 13 points. Fisher has been a scoring machine for the Purple Eagles this season, producing 26.8 ppg as one of the top scorers in the nation. While he has made an incredible 176-of-222 at the free-throw line and is clearing better than nine rebounds per game, his 38 percent accuracy from the field is somewhat lacking. Lewis and Hodge chip in with 16.7 and 12.2 ppg, respectively, but even with that trio of scorers, the team is posting 76.0 ppg and giving up 72.3 ppg.
Gerald Brown took it upon himself to make sure the Greyhounds would find their way back into the win column earlier this week, putting up a game-high 33 points in the victory over Saint Peter's at home. Brett Harvey added 13 points and handed out seven assists, while Michael Tuck and Marquis Sullivan contributed with 11 and 10 points, respectively, the former pulling down eight rebounds as well. Over the course of 13 conference games this season, Brown is scoring 20.0 ppg and has made 42 percent of his three-point tries along the way. When it comes to his overall performance in 2007-08, Brown is right there again with a team-high 19.0 ppg, although his field goal shooting slips to only 39.4 percent. Sullivan and Tuck supply considerable support in the realm of scoring with averages of 12.0 and 11.4 ppg, respectively, with the latter also pulling down a team-best seven rebounds per game as well.
The Purple Eagles have quite a bit of talent this season, not to mention one of the top scorers in the nation, but Loyola has shown that it is no pushover at home. However, expect to see Fisher explode yet again, but this time get his team into the win column.
