GAME NOTES: Two of the three remaining undefeated teams in Ivy League play square off at Newman Arena tonight, as the Cornell Big Red host the Princeton Tigers. The Big Red enter the contest a perfect 4-0 in the Ivy League and that has them ahead of both Penn and Princeton, whom are each off to 2-0 starts. Cornell recently wrapped up a three-game road swing with a convincing 66-45 triumph over Yale on Saturday. It was the sixth straight victory for the Big Red, who haven't won seven games in a row since capturing 11 consecutive contests during the 1987-88 Ivy League championship run. Now at 12-5 overall, Cornell heads back home, where it has gone a solid 6-1 thus far. As for Princeton, it has already matched its Ivy League win total from a season ago, when the team finished in last place at 2-12. The Tigers kicked off Ancient Eight play with a 57-53 win over Dartmouth on Friday before downing Harvard, 68-54, the following night. The team has now won a season-high three straight games to improve to 5-12 overall. Princeton however, now steps away from home, where it has gone 0-9 between road and neutral site affairs. The Tigers lead the all-time series with the Big Red, 133-73, but the Cornell has won five of the last six meetings.
With their patient attack, the Tigers are producing 56.1 ppg on 42.8 percent shooting from the field this season. Lincoln Gunn leads the way with 10.5 ppg and he is hitting on 41.9 percent of his long-range attempts. Zach Finley is hot on his heels with 10.4 ppg and he is also grabbing a team-high 5.5 rpg, while Kyle Koncz chips in with 9.1 ppg. In the team's last game, Koncz sank 6- of-11 three-pointers and he finished with 24 points in a win over Harvard. Gunn contributed 17 points for the Tigers, who shot 47.1 percent from the field, including a 12-of-29 effort from beyond the arc. The team even did a good job of protecting the ball, committing just eight turnovers.
Cornell has fared well at the offensive end of the floor this season, averaging a solid 76.1 ppg on an efficient 48.2 percent shooting from the floor and an equally as good 41.4 percent from downtown. Ryan Wittman leads this attack with 14.9 ppg and he is also grabbing 4.2 rpg and shooting 48.6 percent from long distance. Louis Dale has provided a nice complement to him with 13.2 ppg and 4.1 rpg and he also has a team-best 22 steals to his name. In the squad's prior contest, Wittman tallied 18 points and collected five caroms to lead the Big Red in a win over Yale. Dale chipped in with 10 points for Cornell, which stepped up on defense and held Yale to a horrific 25.9 percent shooting effort from the field.
The Big Red appear to be the team to beat in the Ivy League and with another solid effort at both ends of the floor, they should have no trouble defeating a Princeton team that is short on talent.
