GAME NOTES: The Loyola-Maryland Greyhounds are playing a home game for the first time in two weeks, as they welcome the Saint Peter's Peacocks to Reitz Arena for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tussle. The Peacocks have had a tough time of it this season, but did manage to sneak a 78-68 victory over Manhattan their last time on the hardwood. The win snapped an eight-game skid, and represented just the fifth victory for Saint Peter's this season. As for Loyola, the Greyhounds had a six-game win streak snapped on Tuesday night in a hard-fought 83-79 final at Niagara. With the loss, the Greyhounds sit at 13-11 overall this season, and own an 8-4 mark in MAAC play. Saint Peter's holds a 37-29 lead in the all-time series between these two programs.
The Peacocks shot 52.1 percent from the floor during Sunday's win over Manhattan, including 7-of-14 from beyond the arc. The Peacocks also converted 21-of-30 at the charity stripe, and controlled the glass, 41-32, to help overcome 22 turnovers. Nick Leon poured in a game-high 20 points and dished out seven assists to pace Saint Peter's, while Todd Sowell added 19 points to go with 13 rebounds. Darrell Lampley tallied 18 points off the bench and Wesley Kenkins netted 12 points and grabbed seven boards for the Peacocks. Saint Peter's is shooting just 41.1 percent from the floor as a team this season, including 34.3 percent from long range. The Peacocks boast just two starters with double-digit scoring averages, starting with Sowell and his 12.7 ppg. Sowell also leads the club on the boards (10.6 rpg), while Wesley Jenkins checks in as the club's second-leading scorer with 12.6 ppg.
Loyola averages a respectable 70.6 ppg, and currently boasts three players netting double figures on a consistent basis. Gerald Brown paces the squad with 18.4 points to go with 5.1 rebounds per game, followed by Marquis Sullivan and his 12.1 ppg. Michael Tuck leads the team in rebounding (7.0 rpg), and rounds out the trio with 11.4 ppg. Brown poured in a game-high 30 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Greyhounds in Tuesday's loss to Niagara, while Sullivan and Brian Rudolph tallied 12 points apiece. The Greyhounds shot just 41.9 percent from the floor, and were out-rebounded by a 37-35 margin.
Saint Peter's has been dismal this season, especially on the road, where the Peacocks have yet to record a victory in 11 games. Give the edge to the home team, as Loyola should have little trouble picking up the victory.
