GAME NOTES: The Chattanooga Mocs will try to get back in the win column tonight when they host the struggling Furman Paladins in Southern Conference action at McKenzie Arena. Furman was thoroughly outplayed its last time on the hardwood, producing its lowest output of the season in a 75-42 drubbing at Wofford. The loss continued the Paladins' road woes, as the squad has lost all nine true road affairs. The outlook doesn't get much sunnier for Furman with matchups against UNC Greensboro and conference-unbeaten Davidson next week. Chattanooga meanwhile, was stunned by Western Carolina on Monday night, falling by a 70-64 margin for its second straight loss. The setback dropped the Mocs out of a tie for the North Division lead with three-straight road games on the horizon. Chattanooga defeated Furman, 77-60 back on January 5th, ending a four-game losing streak to the Paladins and extending its all-time lead to, 42-20.
Furman is averaging a conference-worst 61.0 ppg, while being outscored by more than 11 points a ball game. The struggles on the offensive end were palpable in the latest defeat at Wofford, as Alex Opacic proved to be only Paladin in double figures with 11 points. He's pacing the squad with 10.6 points and 4.6 rebounds per game, while Justin Dehm has contributed 10.5 ppg. Tony Anderson isn't much of a scoring threat, but he tops the squad with 69 assists, while only turning the ball over 42 times. The lack of a big man has hindered Furman, as opponents are outrebounding the Paladins by more than six boards a game and shooting a back-breaking 48.4 percent from the floor.
Four Mocs in double-figures could not overcome 20 turnovers in Chattanooga's six-point loss to Western Carolina on Monday. Leading scorer, Stephen McDowell (15.4 ppg), paced the squad with 15 points in the loss. McDowell has sunk an amazing 85 trifectas while leading the squad with 31 steals. Nicchaeus Doaks, who is producing 13.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per contest, shot just 4-of-12 from the field en route to tallying 11 points in the loss. In averaging 10.0 ppg, Kevin Bridgewaters is hitting 45.5 percent from the floor and leading the team with 70 dimes.
Chattanooga will take out its frustrations on a below average Paladin squad, as the Mocs will make this game a rout from the opening tip.
