GAME NOTES: Two struggling teams in the Horizon League will collide this evening, as the Youngstown State Penguins host the Detroit Titans at the Beeghly Center. it has been a terrible season up to this point for Detroit, as the team has lost 16 of its 21 contests. Detroit has dropped 14 of its last 15 matchups, and the most recent setback was a heartbreaking, 66-64 loss to Wisconsin-Green Bay this past weekend. The Titans have been atrocious in league play this season, posting a pathetic 1-10 mark. As for the Penguins, they have also struggled this year, and come into this matchup with a six-game losing skid. The last time YSU was on the court, the team suffered a rough, 86-72 setback to Illinois-Chicago. The current losing skid has dropped the Penguins' league record to 3-9 on the season. The Penguins have won three consecutive meetings against Detroit, including a a hard-fought, 70-66 victory earlier this season. Despite the loss, the Titans still own a commanding, 17-5 edge over YSU in the all-time series.
The Titans' terrible season can be attributed to their play at the offensive end of the floor, as the team is netting just 61.4 ppg, while shooting 43.3 percent from the floor. Jon Goode has been the only true scoring threat for Detroit, as the guard is netting 19.3 ppg. Chris Hayes has been the main source of production in the paint, and heads into this game with 11.2 ppg and a team- high 6.4 rpg. The offensive woes for Detroit continued this past weekend, as the team fell to Wisconsin-Green Bay by a two-point margin. In the setback, the Titans shot 44.1 percent from the floor, but and only 8-of-21 three-point attempts and just 4-of-7 shots from the foul line. Goode led the way in the loss with 21 points, while Hayes added 17 points. The rest of the team however, netted just 26 points.
Just like their counterpart, the Penguins have struggled at the offensive end of the court, netting just 65.3 ppg. Byron Davis has been the main source of production for YSU, as the guard is leading the way with 14.8 ppg. John Barber has been the best option in the paint, and is netting 13.5 ppg to go along with a team-high 7.2 rpg. Jack Liles rounds out the double-figure scorers with 10.7 ppg. The offensive struggles continued this past weekend, as the team shot a mere 37.3 percent from the floor in a 14-point loss to UIC. Vytas Sulskis led the way with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Liles tallied 16 points. Davis connected on only 2-of-12 shots from the floor, and finished with 10 points in the loss.
Both teams have faltered offensively, but the Penguins have a solid frontcourt tandem in Liles and Barber and that should be good for YSU to grab a victory tonight.
