GAME NOTES: Colonial Athletic Association action will take place tonight at Matthews Arena, as the Northeastern Huskies will host the Old Dominion Monarchs. The Monarchs are coming off a convincing, 73-50 victory over Georgia State this past weekend. The victory pushed ODU's league mark to 6-5 on the year. Next up for ODU will be back-to-back home games against George Mason and Drexel. As for the Huskies, they have won their last two contests, defeating Delaware (53-49) and most recently Drexel (63-40). With the small winning streak, Northeastern is now 5-6 in conference play. Last season the Monarchs grabbed a 73-67 victory over Northeastern, and now have a 2-1 edge in the all- time series with the Huskies.
Defense has been a strong suit for the Monarchs, as the team is limiting opponents to just 64.2 ppg. That type of stingy defensive effort continued this past weekend, as ODU held Georgia State to just 50 points. In the 23-point victory, the Monarchs held the Panthers to a pathetic 27.8 percent shooting effort, which included a 5-of-18 clip from behind the arc. At the other end of the floor the team was led by Ben Finney, who scored 14 points to go along with seven rebounds. Brian Henderson added 12 points, while Frank Hassell and Gerald Lee tallied 10 points apiece. Lee has been the team's top option all year, as the forward is posting 13.0 ppg to go along with 5.9 rpg and 22 blocks. As a whole however, ODU is netting just 65.8 ppg on the season.
During the Huskies' small two-game winning streak, the team has held its opponent to under 50 points in both matchups. In the recent win, Northeastern limited Drexel to just 40 points, en route to a 23-point win. The Huskies were ferocious defensively, limiting the Dragons to a pathetic 23.4 percent shooting effort, while also forcing Drexel into 21 turnovers. Matt Janning led the way offensively with 19 points, while Eugene Spates also tallied 19 points to go along with eight boards off the bench. Janning has been the top option for the Huskies throughout the season and is currently averaging 16.2 ppg. Nkem Ojougboh and Manny Adako have also made solid contributions on the year. Ojougboh has dominated the paint, netting 11.4 ppg to go along with 7.2 rpg, while Adako is chipping in 10.8 ppg.
This will no doubt be a low scoring affair. Neither team has proven to be consistent offensively, and should continue to be plagued by struggles at that end of the floor. However, the Huskies are home and do have a few more scoring options, giving them the edge in this contest.
