GAME NOTES: The Bobcats of Ohio University come storming into Ypsilanti for a Mid-American Conference showdown with the Eastern Michigan Eagles at the Convocation Center this evening. The Bobcats have clawed their way to five consecutive victories, including a convincing, 73-55 win over Northern Illinois this past weekend. With the recent streak, the Bobcats are now 6-2 in league action, placing them in a three way tie with Kent State and Akron for first place in the East Division. As for the Eagles, they have lost four of their last five games, including three consecutive setbacks. The latest loss came this past Saturday, as the Eagles were defeated by Akron, 80-61. The recent skid has dropped EMU's conference ledger to a mere 3-5 on the season. The Bobcats have won four of the last six meeting against Eastern Michigan, and now hold a commanding, 41-20 edge over the Eagles in the all-time series.
The Bobcats have done a tremendous at the defensive end of the floor, limiting teams to just 63.8 ppg. In the recent win over Northern Illinois, the Bobcats continued their exceptional defensive play, holding the Huskies to a mere 39.2 percent shooting effort. In the 18-point win, Ohio forced 17 turnovers and dominated the play on the glass, outrebounding NIU, 36-27. Leon Williams recorded his 10th double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Jerome Tillman and Bubba Walther added 17 and 15 points, respectively. Williams has been the main source of production throughout the season for Ohio, as the forward is netting 16.5 ppg to go along with 10.1 rpg. Tillman has also done a solid job on the year, contributing 13.9 ppg to go along with 7.3 rpg. Walther rounds out the double-figure scorers with 10.9 ppg.
Inconsistent play at the offensive end of the floor has played a tremendous role in the Eagles' struggles this year. EMU is currently averaging just 65.2 ppg, while shooting just 42.4 percent from the floor. Carlos Medlock has been the top option for EMU, as the guard is netting 13.6 ppg, despite shooting only 36.5 percent from the floor. Justin Dobbins and Jesse Bunkley have also made solid contributions this season, as both players are chipping in 10.1 ppg apiece. The offensive woes for EMU continued this past weekend, as the squad fell to Akron, 80-61. In the loss, EMU shot just 33.3 percent from the field, and connected on just 10-of-34 three-point attempts. Tyler Jones led the way with 17 points, while Jarred Axon added 14 points. As for Medlock, he netted just 3-of-12 attempts from the floor and finished with only 11 points, and also committed seven turnovers.
The Bobcats are riding a wave of momentum and should have no problem crashing down on a weak Eastern Michigan squad. Expect another strong outing from Williams and company.
