GAME NOTES: ACC foes collide in Chestnut Hill tonight, as the Maryland Terrapins come calling on the Boston College Eagles. Maryland has won its last two games and four of the last five overall to move to 14-8 on the year and 4-3 in conference play. The Terps are coming off a thrilling 88-86 road win over Georgia Tech on Saturday, and they have now scored at least 82 points in each of the last four outings. Maryland has played just four true road games this season, and the club's 3-1 record in those tilts is impressive. As for Boston College, it has lost four consecutive games to erase a promising 3-0 start to conference play. Three of the four setbacks during the current slump have been blowouts, including a 78-56 loss to Clemson on Saturday. The all-time series between Maryland and Boston College is tied at 4-4, and the Eagles won the first meeting this season by an 81-78 final.
All five starters for Maryland scored in double figures in the two-point victory over Georgia Tech on Saturday. Bambale Osby led the way with 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Landon Milbourne pitched in 16 points. Both James Gist and Eric Hayes tallied 14 points, and while Gist pulled down nine boards, Hayes dished out eight assists. Rounding out the group way Greivis Vasquez with 13 points, nine assists and four steals. The Terps connected on 55.9 percent of their field goal attempts, helping them overcome 24 turnovers. Vasquez leads the club in scoring this season with 16.7 ppg, and he is tops with 6.3 apg and 35 steals as well. Gist is contributing 15.4 ppg, 7.9 rpg and 50 blocks, while Osby adds 11.8 ppg. The fourth and final double-digit scorer for the Terps is Eric Hayes with 11.1 ppg.
Tyrese Rice is one of the most explosive scorers in the ACC, as the Boston College standout is netting 19.8 ppg overall and an even more impressive 21.3 ppg in ACC games. While Rice is the primary offensive option, there are two other double-digit scorers in the lineup. Rakim Sanders adds 12.5 ppg to the mix, and Shamari Spears rounds out the trio with 10.6 ppg. BC is generating 72.7 ppg while allowing 70.3 ppg to the opposition. Rice scored 17 points against Clemson on Saturday, but he was the only double-digit scorer for the Tigers. Sure, they shot 51.3 percent from the floor, but the fact that they only finished with 39 field goal attempts in 40 minutes of action is concerning. Boston College managed just eight assists and turned the ball over 20 times. A 31-24 rebounding disadvantage also hurt the cause.
Go with Maryland in this clash, as it is simply the better team. Expect the Terps to pull ahead down the stretch and earn a solid road win.
