GAME NOTES: ACC rivals will collide in Winston-Salem tonight as the Wake Forest Demon Deacons play host to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. This has been a season of inconsistency for Georgia Tech, which is 10-10 overall and 3-4 in league play. The Yellow Jackets put together their first three-game win streak of the season and had a chance to make it four in a row against Maryland on Saturday, but the home crowd watched in disappointment as the club dropped an 88-86 decision to the Terps. It will be interesting to see how Wake Forest performs tonight after suffering a heart-breaking 67-65 loss to NC State on Sunday on a last-second shot. That setback was the second in the last three games for the Demon Deacons, who are tied with the Yellow Jackets at 3-4 in the league standings. Wake Forest holds a 34-29 series edge over Georgia Tech, and the Deacs won two of the three meetings last year.
Four players scored in double figures for Georgia Tech in the narrow loss to Maryland last time out. Zack Peacock tallied 18 points off the bench, and Matt Causey added 12 points in a reserve role. The starting five was paced by D'Andre Bell with 11 points, and Anthony Morrow contributed 10 points. The Yellow Jackets did manage to force a whopping 24 turnovers in that clash, but they permitted the Terps to shoot 55.9 percent from the floor. Morrow is the leading scorer for Tech through the first 20 games of this season, as he is netting 14.1 ppg on the strength of his 45.1 percent shooting from three-point range. Lewis Clinch adds 11.3 ppg for the Yellow Jackets, who are generating 78.1 ppg while limiting opponents to 74.7 ppg.
James Johnson is averaging 14.5 ppg to go along with other team-highs of 8.3 rpg and 25 blocks, impressive numbers for the Wake Forest freshman standout. The only other double-digit scorer for the Demons Deacons is Jeff Teague, who checks in with 11.9 ppg. Wake is scoring 71.1 ppg overall while surrendering 65.9 ppg to the opposition. Unfortunately, the team permitted an NC State player to dunk home a rebound as time expired on Sunday to win the game for the Wolfpack. Teague had 17 points in that clash, and Ishmael Smith was close behind with 15 points. Johnson was limited to 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting from the floor, and fellow starting forward Jamie Skeen connected on only 1- of-11 field goal attempts. The Demon Deacons shot just 39.1 percent as a team, overshadowing a low total of nine turnovers and a strong defensive showing.
Watch for an upset tonight, as Georgia Tech is the more talented team. Still, expect this one to be decided in the final minute.
