GAME NOTES: Mid-American Conference play will take place tonight at Anderson Arena, as the Bowling Green Falcons will host the Central Michigan Chippewas. The Chippewas are coming off a thrilling, 100-96 overtime victory over Buffalo this past weekend. The win brought the Chippewas' league record to an even 4-4 on the year. Where CMU has struggled is on the road, as the team is just 3-9 away from home. As for the Falcons, they had their three-game winning streak snapped with a tough, 64-50 setback to Western Michigan this past weekend. With the setback the Falcons are now 5-3 in MAC action, which place them one game behind Kent State, Akron and Ohio. In terms of the all-time series, the Falcons have a strong 35-28 lead over Central Michigan.
The Chippewas rely heavily on the play of standout guard Giordan Watson. Watson is one of the top players in the MAC, and heads into this game averaging 17.0 ppg. Watson, who is shooting a solid 41.6 percent from behind the arc, is also leading the team with 91 assists and 39 steals. The Chippewas needed overtime the last time they took the floor, but the team was able to grab a four-point win over Buffalo. In the victory, CMU shot 44.7 percent from the field and made 20-of-30 attempts from the foul line. Watson poured in 34 points in the victory and also dished out eight assists, while collecting five steals. Chris Kellermann and Jeremy Allen, both posted 15 points apiece, while Jordan Bitzer contributed 11 points in the win. Throughout the season, Central Michigan has been mediocre at best offensively, averaging 70.8 ppg, while shooting 44.1 percent from the floor.
The Falcons have had a very tough time offensively throughout the season and are currently averaging just 63.0 ppg. Nate Miller is leading BGSU on the season with 12.9 ppg, while also collecting 5.7 rpg. Chris Knight is another double-figure scorer with 11.3 ppg, and is also pulling down a team-best 7.1 rpg. The last time the Falcons took the court the team struggled mightily, scoring just 50 points in a 14-point setback to Western Michigan. In the loss, the Falcons shot just 40.9 percent from the floor and made just 2-of-13 three- point attempts. Knight posted 13 points in the loss, while Brian Moten chipped in 12 points.
Watson is definitely the most dangerous player in this matchup, but for CMU to win regularly, the team must find a second and third option. However, that is unlikely to happen here, as Bowling Green should win at home.
