GAME NOTES: The red-hot UNC Greensboro Spartans will try to remain in the win column when they battle the Georgia Southern Eagles this evening in a Southern Conference showdown at the Hanner Fieldhouse. The Spartans have won 10 of their last 12 games, including four in a row. The last time UNCG was on the court the team grabbed a convincing, 89-60 victory over Elon. The win pushed the Spartans' league mark to a solid 7-3 on the year. As for the Eagles, they had their two-game winning streak snapped with a tough, 96-91 setback to Chattanooga this past week. The loss dropped the Eagles to just 7-5 in league play. Georgia Southern has performed well at home this year, winning six of its seven contests at the Hanner Fieldhouse. The Spartans have won the last three matchups against the Eagles, including a victory earlier this season. The current streak has given UNC Greensboro a slim 8-6 edge over Georgia Southern in the all-time series.
The Spartans rely heavily on the play of center Kyle Hines. Hines has been outstanding for Greensboro, as the big man is leading the team with 18.9 ppg, 9.5 rpg and 53 blocks. Kevin Oleksiak and Mikko Koivisto have also made solid contributions this season, as the Oleksiak is netting 10.6 ppg, while Koivisto is chipping in 10.5 ppg. The last time the Spartans were on the floor the team defeated Elon by a 29-point margin. Greensboro shot a sizzling 59.6 percent from the field in the win and dominated the glass by a 38-25 margin. Hines led the way with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Dwayne Johnson and Mikko Koivisto both contributed 17 points apiece.
Throughout the season the Eagles have flown high offensively, averaging 74.2 ppg, while shooting 43.3 percent from the floor. Louis Graham has been everything for this squad and is currently pacing the team with 16.1 ppg and 7.0 rpg. Willie Powers is second on the team in scoring with 12.4 ppg, while Dwayne Foreman has ran the show on the court, averaging 6.1 apg on the year. The Eagles erupted for 91 points the last time they were on the court, but that was still not enough to get past Chattanooga, as the team fell by a five-point margin. Graham led the way with 27 points in the loss, while Foreman added 23 points and seven assists. As for Powers, he tallied 13 points for Georgia Southern.
The Spartans have played extremely well over the past couple of weeks, but the Eagles have been tough at home and should prevail this evening.
