GAME NOTES: Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action will take place this afternoon when the Canisius Golden Griffins host the Loyola-Maryland Greyhounds at the Koessler Center. The Greyhounds were scheduled to take on the Purple Eagles of Niagara this past Friday, but due to inclement weather the game was postponed. Hopefully the layoff does not affect the Greyhounds, who come into this game with a five-game winning streak. The last time Loyola was on the court the team posted a convincing, 72-54 victory over NJIT. With the current streak the Greyhounds are now 7-3 in MAAC action. As for the Golden Griffins, it has been a tough year, as the team has dropped 17 of the 21 contests thus far. However, one of the team's four wins came this past Friday, as the squad dominated Fairfield, 88-60. It was just the second conference win of the season for Canisius, which defeated Niagara a couple of weeks ago. The Golden Griffins lead the all-time series, 29-16, but Loyola has won two straight and five of the last seven meetings, overall.
The Greyhounds' top performer this season has been Gerald Brown, as the guard is averaging 17.9 ppg, despite shooting only 38.0 percent from the floor. Brown is also grabbing 5.1 rpg and has a team-high 42 steals. Marquis Sullivan has done extremely well from behind the arc, shooting 41.3 percent from long range, while averaging 12.0 ppg. Michael Tuck has been the main source of production in the paint, as the forward is netting 11.1 ppg to go along with 7.4 rpg. The last time Loyola was on the court the team shot 45.8 percent from the floor, en route to an 18-point win. The Greyhounds also made 23-of-30 attempts from the foul line. Tuck led the way in the win with 23 points and eight rebounds, while Brown and Sullivan contributed 16 and 13 points, respectively.
The Golden Griffins exploded the last time they were on the floor, scoring 88 points en route to a 28-point win over Fairfield. In the victory, Canisius shot a staggering 61.7 percent from the floor and made an impressive 14-of-23 attempts from long range. Frank Turner scored a career-high 26 points in the contest and also dished out six assists. Jovan Robinson added 16 points and six rebounds, while Greg Logins tallied 14 points to go along with eight boards. Elton Frazier and Bob Bevilacqua contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively. However, only Turner has been a consistent scoring threat this season, as the guard is leading the team with 12.8 ppg and 94 assists. Although Canisius was outstanding against Fairfield, the team has been dreadful offensively throughout the season, netting just 59.8 ppg.
The Golden Griffins are coming off a tremendous effort against Fairfield. The team should continue to play well, but expect Loyola to grab a key road conference victory.
