GAME NOTES: The Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers will try to keep the good times rolling tonight, as they square off against the Detroit Titans in Horizon League play at Calihan Hall. The Panthers are as hot a team as any in the HL at the moment, as they have won nine of their past 10 outings, including three in a row. On Saturday, UWM showed it should be mentioned among the top teams in the conference, knocking off league-leading Cleveland State by a 79-71 score. With the victory, the Panthers improved themselves to 12-8 overall and 7-3 in conference play. On the flip side of things, Detroit has been simply awful since a 4-2 start to the season. Following a 72-68 win at Eastern Michigan on November 28th, the Titans have dropped 13 consecutive games, including a 66-57 setback to Wright State on Saturday. The team is now 0-9 in conference play and that includes a 0-5 mark at home. Detroit dropped a narrow 55-53 decision to UWM earlier this month, giving the Panthers a 15-14 edge in the all-time series with the Titans.
The Panthers outscored Cleveland State at the foul line, 29-13, and that was the difference in their eight-point win over the weekend. UWM shot a decent 42.9 percent from the field and it also held a 43-34 advantage on the boards. Ricky Franklin led the charge with 18 points, while Marcus Skinner had a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Paige Paulsen logged a double- double of his own, finishing with 13 points and 11 boards in the triumph. For the season, Paulsen tops the roster in scoring (15.3 ppg), as well as rebounding (7.0 rpg) and he is shooting 45.8 percent from long distance. Franklin chips in with 9.9 ppg for the Panthers, who are netting 69.3 ppg on 40.7 percent shooting from the field this season.
The Titans were limited to a sub par 37.0 percent shooting effort from the floor, as they were dropped by Wright State this past weekend. The team didn't have much success from beyond the arc either, converting just 5-of-20 attempts. Jon Goode scored 17 points to lead Detroit, while Chris Hayes posted 16 points and six boards. For the season, Goode has been one of the few bright spots for the Titans, leading them with 19.5 ppg on the strength of 46.3 percent shooting from three-point land. Hayes has helped out as well and he turns in 10.5 ppg and a team-best 6.6 rpg. Overall, Detroit is scoring a mere 60.7 ppg, despite making good on 39.9 percent of its attempts from downtown.
The Panthers are playing with a great deal of confidence right now, but they could be in store for a letdown on the road. As a matter of fact, behind the efforts of Goode, look for the Titans to pull off the upset tonight.
