South Alabama (17-3) at North Texas (12-7)

GAME NOTES: The South Alabama Jaguars will try to remain perfect in league action when they take on the North Texas Mean Green this evening in a Sun Belt Conference matchup at the Super Pit. The Jaguars have been one of the real surprises in the entire nation and head into this matchup with an outstanding 13-game winning streak. The last time South Alabama was on the court, the team posted a convincing 71-33 victory over Denver, pushing its league record to a perfect 9-0. As for the Mean Green, they are in the midst of a small slump, losing three consecutive contests, including a 69-60 loss to Middle Tennessee this past Sunday. The current losing skid has dropped North Texas to just 3-5 in league play. North Texas has done a tremendous job at home, winning nine of its 10 contests at the Super Pit. The Jags have won six consecutive meetings against North Texas and hold a commanding, 12-3 edge in the all-time series.

This past Sunday the Jaguars were outstanding defensively, limiting Denver to just 33 points and a pathetic 28.9 percent shooting effort. South Alabama also held the Pioneers to just 1-of-16 from long range and also dominated the battle on the glass, 37-21. Throughout the season, the Jags have done extremely well at that end of the floor and are currently surrendering just 63.9 ppg. At the other end, the team is being led by Demetric Bennett, who is scoring 20.2 ppg. Bennett is also grabbing 5.8 rpg and has a team-high 28 steals. Domonic Tilford is second on the team with 13.9 ppg, while Daon Merritt has run the show on the floor, posting a team-best 104 assists to go along with 11.8 ppg. Brandon Davis has played well in the paint, as the forward is netting 10.7 ppg to go along with 6.1 rpg and a team-best 28 blocks. In the 38-point win over Denver, Bennett led the way with 24 points, while Merritt chipped in 12 points and dished out six assists.

The Mean Green bring a well balanced offensive attack to the court, as the team is currently averaging 78.5 ppg, while shooting 46.1 percent from the floor. Josh White, who is shooting a stellar 48.5 percent from behind the arc, comes into this matchup averaging 14.5 ppg. Collin Dennis has also done well for North Texas, as the guard is chipping in 13.1 ppg. Quincy Williams has been the best option down low, and comes into this game posting 9.9 ppg and a team-high 7.7 rpg. Unfortunately, the last time North Texas was on the court, the team struggled offensively, scoring just 60 points in a nine-point loss to Middle Tennessee. The Mean Green shot 46.2 percent from the floor, but made just 4-of-18 three-point attempts and also committed 17 turnovers. White led the way with 16 points, while Dez Willingham and Williams contributed 14 and 13 points, respectively.

If the Mean Green were playing at a higher level, the team would have a chance this evening. However, North Texas has struggled of late and should continue to falter against a tough South Alabama squad.
