GAME NOTES: The Davidson Wildcats look to continue their dominance over the Southern Conference when they host the Wofford Terriers tonight at Belk Arena. Wofford faced a crossroads following a three-game losing streak earlier in the month. Following the disheartening setbacks, the Terriers took the high road and managed four straight victories, including a 67-66 last-second triumph over the College of Charleston on Monday night. Following tonight's upset bid, the Terriers play host to Furman Saturday night. After playing a tough non- conference schedule at the start of the season, Davidson has used the experience they gained in those contests to wreak havoc on the SoCon. The Wildcats have won nine games in a row, including a 70-58 victory over the College of Charleston on Saturday. The triumph marked the 21st consecutive regular-season conference victory for Davidson, as the team looks ahead to a rematch at second-place Chattanooga on Saturday. Davidson easily handed Wofford an 85-50 loss earlier in the year for its fifth straight victory over the Terriers, extending its all-time lead to 63-21..
Corey Godzinski's dunk with 1.9 seconds left on Monday night gave Wofford its one-point victory over the College of Charleston. It was Godzinski's best performance of the season, as he posted a team-high 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field. The Terriers halfcourt offense slowed the game down to their liking, as they shot 49.0 percent from the floor and didn't allow Charleston many fast break opportunities. Drew Gibson, who added 10 points in the win, is putting up 10.5 ppg, dishing out a team-high 101 assists and only committing 53 turnovers. Leading scorer Shane Nichols (15.0 ppg) returned to action after missing two games and tallied eight points in 22 minutes.
Thomas Sander displayed skills on Saturday that showed that Stephen Curry and Jason Richards aren't the only playmakers on the Davidson roster. Sander poured in a season-high 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field, while grabbing his usual five rebounds. Curry, the nation's fifth-leading scorer at 23.9 ppg, added 16 points, while Richards recorded 12 points and three assists in the 12- point victory. Richards leads the nation with 8.4 apg, while chipping in 12.8 ppg. With these offensive threats and a conference-leading 65.3 points against per game, it will be tough for anyone in the SoCon to keep up with the Wildcats.
Even though Wofford has been playing very well lately, the Davidson Wildcats are in a different league than the rest of the conference. The triumvirate of Curry, Richards and Sander will easily lead Davidson to its 22nd straight conference win.
