GAME NOTES: The Kent State Golden Flashes will try to remain on top of the Mid-American Conference standings when they take on the Eastern Michigan Eagles this evening at the Convocation Center. Kent State has been nothing short of dominant this season and heads into this game with victories in six of its last seven games. The last time KSU was on the court the team grabbed a 67-58 victory over Western Michigan. The win pushed the Flashes' league record to 5-1, which is tops in the MAC. As for the Eagles, they have lost two of their last three games, including an embarrassing, 65-52 setback to Miami-Ohio this past weekend. Eastern Michigan is currently just 7-11 on the season, however four of those wins have come at the Convocation Center. Eastern Michigan leads the all-time series against Kent State, 33-30. However the Flashes have won the last 11 meetings including a convincing, 82-46 victory over the Eagles last season.
The Flashes have not been overly impressive offensively, but the team has done just enough to continue its winning ways. Kent State is producing just 69.5 ppg, while shooting 46.9 percent from the field. Mike Scott is currently leading the Flashes with 14.0 ppg, and is also collecting 6.2 rpg. Al Fisher has ran the show on the floor and comes into this matchup with 12.3 ppg and a team-best 4.3 apg. The main option in the paint has been Haminn Quaintance, who is netting 10.4 ppg, while also grabbing a team-best 7.6 rpg. The last time KSU was on the court, the team grabbed a nine-point win over Western Michigan. The Flashes shot just 41.7 percent from the field, but made 23-of-29 free throw attempts in the victory. Fisher led the way with 17 points and also collected seven rebounds, while Scott contributed 13 points. As for Quaintance, he only posted four points and four rebounds in 27 minutes of action.
As for the Eagles, they have dealt with inconsistent play throughout the season offensively, and head into this matchup averaging just 65.3 ppg, while shooting 42.8 percent from the floor. Carlos Medlock has been the main source of producing for EMU, as the guard is leading the team with 13.6 ppg and 4.3 rpg. Jesse Bunkley has also played well at times this season and is currently netting 10.5 ppg. The offensive woes for the Eagles continued this past weekend, as the squad was defeated by Miami-Ohio, 65-52. In the loss the Eagles shot over 50.0 percent from the field, but made only 6-of-17 attempts from behind the arc and just 6-of-10 shots from the foul line. Medlock posted 15 points in the loss, while Justin Dobbins contributed 12 points. As for Bunkley, he finished with eight points and three assists.
Although the Eagles are home, the team will have a hard time trying to compete with the top team in the conference. Kent State will not win by a large margin, but the team should have a lead throughout most of the contest and cruise to another league win.
