GAME NOTES: The San Diego State Aztecs try to bring an end to their first two- game slide tonight as they visit fellow Mountain West Conference foe Colorado State at Moby Arena in Fort Collins. Heading into this past weekend, the Aztecs had yet to suffer back-to-back defeats and after a 59-56 loss to BYU on Wednesday night the possibility was looming. SDSU then moved back home to Cox Arena for a Saturday bout versus UNLV, a meeting that dropped the Aztecs in a 72-69 setback. Meanwhile, Colorado State was up to it's old tricks with another losing effort versus Wyoming, 73-58, during one of the more anticipated games of the season for both programs. The defeat was the sixth in a row and the 10th in 11 tries since the first week of December. CSU leads the all-time series with the Aztecs by a count of 35-24, winning the most recent affair as part of the 2007 MWC Tournament in Las Vegas with a 69-64 decision. Prior to that victory the Rams had dropped five in a row to SDSU.
San Diego State held the slimmest of leads in the first half versus the Runnin' Rebels the last time out and then watched as UNLV knocked down 54.5 percent from the field and 5-of-8 beyond the arc in the second half to secure the win. Ryan Amoroso was one of four players to score in double figures for the Aztecs, posting 15 points, followed by Kyle Spain who had 13. Billy White contributed 11 points and seven boards, followed by Richie Williams with 10 points off the bench. The leading scorer after 20 starts this season, Wade gets his hands in on anything and everything, from netting 15.0 ppg to grabbing 4.4 rpg, to dishing out 59 assists, swatting 13 shots and coming up with 24 steals. Spain accounts for another 13.9 ppg and is one of the more reliable three-point shooters on the roster at 41 percent. Holding opponents to just 63.2 ppg has come partly because the defense for the Aztecs has forced those foes into 16.5 turnovers per outing thus far.
The Rams had to think that their shooting would be better in the second half, after making just 31.3 percent from the floor and 2-of-12 beyond the arc in the opening frame, but it didn't get much better. The squad finished the afternoon converting only 34.3 percent from the field as Marcus Walker generated a team-best 26 points on 10-of-27 shooting from the floor. Willis Gardner added 10 points as he missed all six chances out on the perimeter. Walker, the leading scorer in eight straight tilts for CSU, leads the program with a 18.0 ppg. Against league opponents, the outlook is slightly brighter with Walker bumping up his production to 23.2 ppg, but the only other active double-digit scorer for the group is Gardner with 11.9 ppg. Just as important, Walker and Gardner have combined for 109 assists in order to keep the Rams moving in the right direction.
Walker has been playing well for the Rams this season, but the loss of Stuart Creason continues to hurt the group, so much so that SDSU should be able to invade Fort Collins tonight and come out with the win.
