GAME NOTES: The Austin Peay Governors wrap up a three-game road trip tonight, as they invade the Show Me Center to take on the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks in Ohio Valley Conference action. The Govs enter the tilt on a down note, as they were knocked off at Samford, 63-49, on Saturday. The loss put an end to a three-game win streak and dropped the club to 13-8 overall and 5-6 on the road. Despite the setback, APSU still resides atop the OVC standings with a ledger of 9-2. As for SEMO, it raced out to a 6-0 record in conference play, but it has been all downhill since that fast start. The Redhawks come into the contest riding a season-long six-game losing streak that includes a narrow 86-85 defeat at Murray State on Saturday. Now at an even 11-11 overall, the team returns back home, where it has gone 6-2 thus far. With respect to the all-time series, APSU owns a 24-14 advantage over SEMO and it picked up an 85-82 victory in an earlier meeting this month.
The Govs shot a dismal 33.2 percent from the field, including a sub par 5- of-18 effort from long distance, as they were defeated by Samford this past weekend. The team converted a decent 16-of-23 attempts at the foul line, but that wasn't nearly enough. Derek Wright paced APSU in the loss with 17 points, while Drake Reed was limited to a mere five points. Despite the low output, Reed still leads the Govs in scoring this season with an average of 15.3 ppg. Wes Channels is next in order with 11.9 ppg and he is trailed by Fernandez Lockett, who turns in 11.3 ppg and a team-high 6.6 rpg. Wright adds 10.2 ppg and a team-best 4.5 apg to the mix, while Todd Babington rounds out the double-figure scorers with 10.1 ppg. As a team, the Govs are scoring 71.8 ppg and making good on 45.7 percent of their field goal attempts.
Tyler Holloway nailed a pair of free throws with five seconds remaining, lifting Murray State to an 86-85 win over SEMO on Saturday. The Redhawks were outscored at the foul line, 23-12, and that played a big part in the setback. Kenard Moore and Jaycen Herring each tallied 14 points to lead SEMO, while Michael Rembert notched a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. On the season, Herring leads the squad in scoring at 12.9 ppg and he also has 19 steals to his credit. Roderick Pearson chips in with 10.4 ppg for the Redhawks, who are putting forth a solid 75.8 ppg, but allowing an even higher 80.0 ppg.
APSU is a bit more balanced and it should be able to exploit a weak defensive Redhawks team, en route to the victory tonight.
