GAME NOTES: Southern Conference action will take place this evening, as the Western Carolina Catamounts will host the Georgia Southern Eagles at the Ramsey Center. The last time Georgia Southern was on the court the team snapped a two- game losing skid with a 62-53 victory over Furman. The victory pushed the Eagles' league ledger to a solid 6-4 on the season. Next up for Georgia Southern will be a road game against Chattanooga, followed by three consecutive home games. As for the Catamounts, they have lost six of their last eight games, including a rough, 83-73 setback to Wofford this past weekend. The loss dropped the Catamounts' conference record to a pathetic 2-7. Western Carolina is only 6-13 overall on the season, but five of those victories have come at the Ramsey Center. Last season the Catamounts snapped a seven-game losing skid against Georgia Southern with a 69-57 victory over the Eagles. Despite the loss, Georgia Southern still holds a 15-10 advantage in the all-time series.
The Eagles have been solid offensively for the most part this season, and are currently averaging 73.7 ppg, while shooting 43.9 percent from the field. Louis Graham has been outstanding for Georgia Southern, and is currently leading the team with 15.1 ppg to go along with 7.2 rpg. The forward has also played well defensively, leading the squad with 43 blocks and 38 steals. Willie Powers is the only other player netting double-figures for Georgia Southern, as the guard is chipping in 12.6 ppg. The Eagles only posted 62 points the last time they were on the floor, but it was good enough for Georgia Southern to slip past Furman by a nine-point margin. The Eagles only shot 36.0 percent from the field, but the team did connect on 20-of-29 attempts from the foul line and also won the battle on the glass, 44-35. Graham posted a double-double in the win, netting 14 points to go along with 13 rebounds. Powers added 12 points, while Dwayne Foreman chipped in 10 points to go along with six assists.
Unlike their counterpart, the Catamounts have had trouble offensively, and are only producing 66.1 ppg, while shooting a mere 39.5 percent from the floor. Brandon Giles has been the most consistent threat for WCU, as the guard is netting 14.6 ppg. Michael Porrini is second on the team with 11.3 ppg, despite shooting only 35.8 percent on the year. Porrini is also averaging 5.2 rpg and 3.3 apg, but the guard is questionable for tonight's matchup due to personal reasons. The last time Western Carolina was on the court, the team scored 73 points, but it was still not enough to get past Wofford. In the 10-point loss to the Terriers, Giles led the way with 24 points, while Negus McKenna tallied 19 points off the bench.
If Porrini is not in action tonight, it will be tough for the Catamounts to collect a win in front of their home crowd. Georgia Southern is strong offensively and should be able to overcome Western Carolina on the road.
