GAME NOTES: The Pacific Tigers will try to remain in the win column when they host the Cal Poly Mustangs this evening in a Big West Conference battle at the Alex G. Spanos Center. The Mustangs snapped a three-game losing skid with a solid, 79-67 victory over UC Davis this past Thursday. However, it was only the second victory in eight games for Cal Poly, which is a terrible 1-4 in league action. Cal Poly has been dreadful on the road, as the team has lost seven of its eight contests away from home. As for the Tigers, they have won six of their last seven games, including three in a row. The most recent victory for Pacific came this past Thursday, as the team defeated UC Santa Barbara, 71-58. The win pushed Pacific's league mark to 5-1, which is good enough for second place in the Big West, behind only Cal Northridge (6-0). The Tigers have a commanding, 28-8 lead over Cal Poly in the all-time series, and have won eight of the last nine matchups against the Mustangs.
The Mustangs could possible be the worst offensive team in the Big West, as the squad is netting only 64.2 ppg, while shooting a mere 40.8 percent from the field. The team has also struggled on the glass, losing the rebound battle by a 5.6 rpg margin. There is not one player for Cal Poly averaging double figures, as Trae Clark is leading the way with only 9.2 ppg. Clark, who is shooting well below 40.0 on the year, is also leading the team with 3.6 apg. However, the last time Cal Poly was on the court, the team exploded offensively, scoring a surprising 79 points en route to a 12-point win over UC Davis. The Mustangs shot 60.0 percent from the field and were led by Dreshawn Vance, who scored 19 points. Clark and Chaz Thomas added 16 points apiece in the win, while Lorenzo Keeler chipped in 10 points.
The Tigers have had no trouble producing points this season, and the team comes into this game averaging 73.4 ppg, while shooting an impressive 49.2 percent from the floor. The team is also shooting over 40.0 percent from behind the arc, and is winning the battle on the glass by 5.4 rpg. Steffan Johnson has been sensational this season, as the guard is netting 15.4 ppg. Johnson, who is shooting a solid 43.5 percent from behind the arc, is also leading the team with 89 assists and 31 steals. Chad Troyer is netting 12.9 ppg for Pacific, while Anthony Brown has been strong in the paint, averaging 11.4 ppg to go along with 7.1 rpg. Pacific's solid offensive play continued this past Thursday, as the team defeated UC Santa Barbara, 71-58. In the win the Tigers were led by Troyer, who poured in 27 points. Brown added 10 points and 12 boards, while Johnson chipped eight points and six assists.
The Tigers are just too good for Cal Poly, and should have little trouble posting a victory this evening.
