GAME NOTES: In desperate need of a victory, the 18th-ranked Texas A&M Aggies invade Stillwater for a Big 12 Conference battle with the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Texas A&M only lost one of its first 16 games this season, so the fact that the last three outings have all ended in defeat is troubling. After getting handled easily by both Texas Tech and Kansas State, the Aggies found themselves locked in an epic five-overtime battle with No. 25 Baylor on Wednesday. Despite the support of a the home crowd, A&M fell to the Bears by a 116-110 final, and the club now enters this afternoon's showdown with an 0-3 record in true road games. Oklahoma State is just 10-8 overall this season and 1-3 in the league, but the club is 9-1 at home. Unfortunately, that lone home loss came in the team's most recent outing, as it dropped a 63-61 decision to 12th-ranked Texas on Monday. The Cowboys hope to snap a three-game skid this evening. Oklahoma State holds a 27-11 lead in the all-time series with Texas A&M, but the Aggies crushed the Cowboys twice last season.
Bryan Davis did all he could to keep Texas A&M close in the game against Baylor earlier this week, as the sophomore forward poured in 30 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. All five starters for the Aggies reached double figures in scoring. Donald Sloan posted 18 points, Josh Carter finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Dominique Kirk and Joseph Jones tallied 13 points apiece. Texas A&M finished 36-of-59 from the free throw line, and a more efficient effort most certainly would have resulted in victory. Carter is averaging 13.5 ppg this season, and Jones checks in with 11.4 ppg. The Aggies are putting up 77.3 ppg while allowing only 62.1 ppg on 37.6 percent shooting from the field.
James Anderson, Terrel Harris and Marcus Dove have started all 18 games for Oklahoma State this season, and all three are averaging double figures in scoring. Anderson leads the pack with 15.6 ppg, and Harris checks in with 11.7 ppg. Rounding out the trio with 10.9 ppg is Dove, and he is tops on the roster with 5.9 rpg. The Cowboys are netting 71.6 ppg while limiting opponents to 66.0 ppg. Anderson scored 17 points for OSU against Texas on Monday, and Byron Eaton had 14 points. Dove tallied 11 points and nine boards for the Cowboys, who shot just 38.2 percent from the floor and finished with two more turnovers than assists.
In what figures to be a close game from start to finish, expect the Aggies to get back to their winning ways with a narrow victory. Expect this one to go down to the wire.
