GAME NOTES: On the road again where they have lost all 10 opportunities this season, the Sacramento State Hornets drop in on the Idaho State Bengals for a Big Sky Conference showdown at Holt Arena in Pocatello. The Hornets were in action last just two nights ago in Ogden, Utah where they were dismissed by Weber State in a 69-56 final. The loss was the fourth in a row and the ninth in 10 chances for Sacramento State, now just 3-15 on the season and 1-6 in conference play. As for the Bengals, they've been watching from the sidelines since last Saturday when they dropped a 74-53 outing to Montana State on the road. The defeat was the second in the last three games for ISU, currently 3-2 in league action and winners of a mere six games overall here in 2007-08. With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, Idaho State leads by a count of 17-9 entering this matchup.
Clark Woods dropped in a career-high 21 points on 4-of-5 shooting behind the three-point line on Wednesday night, but his efforts failed to get Sacramento State back into the win column versus the Wildcats. Loren Leath added 11 points for the squad, but he shot just 1-of-5 behind the three-point line on the night, yet the team still made a respectable 8-of-19 from long distance nonetheless. Leath remains the team's top scorer through 18 games with his 15.3 ppg, shooting almost as well from beyond the arc (.345) as he is from the floor overall (.354). Vinnie McGhee chips in with 11.8 ppg and has handed out a total of 97 of the team's 210 assists, but like Leath, his 38.2 percent shooting from the floor leaves a lot to be desired. As a team, the Hornets are hitting just 40.2 percent from the field and a dismal 59.1 percent at the charity stripe.
Inserted into the starting lineup, Donnie Carson responded with 15 points and six rebounds, both team-highs, in the loss to Montana State last weekend. Unfortunately, no one else on the roster managed to reach double figures, as the other four starters combined for a total of 21 points. The squad shot a collective 39.2 percent from the field and just 2-of-12 behind the three-point line in the road setback. Carson had been used sparingly during the non- conference portion of the team's schedule, averaging just 4.0 ppg overall in 2007-08, but in six conference games for the program he has jumped to 10.8 ppg on 51.3 percent shooting from the floor. Matt Stucki is the only other double- digit scorer for the group at the moment with his 11.6 ppg and he is also the leading passer with 63 assists. As a team, the Bengals are one of the lowest- scoring in the nation with 58 ppg, while giving up 70.9 ppg.
The Hornets are a tired bunch who can't seem to put all the pieces together on the road, although Idaho State is certainly a program that is having just as much trouble this season. For a team that is desperate for a win away from home, assume that Sacramento State will put a little more effort into tonight's performance.
