GAME NOTES: The lowly Canisius Golden Griffins hit the road to do battle with the Fairfield Stags in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference contest. At 3-15 overall, including 1-7 in league play, Canisius hasn't had much to be proud of this season. The Griffs are fresh off a blowout loss to Siena on Monday by a 77-49 final, and many of their setbacks have been lopsided this season. They have played nine true road games to date, and all nine have ended in defeat. Fairfield carried a three-game skid into its clash with Saint Peter's on Monday, and the result was a much-needed 70-64 triumph. Although just 6-12 overall this season, the Stags are a respectable 4-4 in MAAC play. Fairfield owns a narrow 33-29 lead in the all-time series with Canisius.
Perhaps the most obvious reason that Canisius has struggled this season is a lack of offensive firepower. The team is averaging a mere 59.6 ppg on 39.8 percent shooting from the floor, and it is surrendering 74.2 ppg to the opposition. Frank Turner is the only double-digit scorer in the mix for the Golden Griffins, as he is netting 12.1 ppg. Canisius put forth a truly embarrassing effort against Siena on Monday, as the club finished with six assists against 18 turnovers and shot just 2-of-14 from three-point range. Worst of all was a 9-of-21 showing from the foul line. Turner scored 15 points for the Griffs, who got 11 points from Rishawn Johnson in a reserve role. Canisius only forced four turnovers in the clash.
Fairfield is only scoring 63.1 ppg this season while surrendering 68.3 ppg to the enemy. Jonathan Han is the lone double-digit scorer on the roster, as he is posting 10.7 ppg on 50 percent shooting from the floor. Han is also tops with 104 assists, as no other player has more than 27 helpers through 18 contests. Mike Evanovich led the Stags with 19 points in the victory over Saint Peter's on Monday. Herbie Allen added 14 points, while Anthony Johnson managed 13 points in a reserve role. Han was limited to five points, but he dished out a staggering total of 13 assists with only one turnover. Fairfield connected on 53.2 percent of its field goal attempts in the clash and overcame a 32-21 rebounding disadvantage.
Fairfield is the smart pick tonight, as it will knock off lowly Canisius in front of the home crowd. Don't expect many more wins from the Griffs this season.
