GAME NOTES: Southern Conference action will take place tonight at Kresse Arena, when the Charleston Cougars host the UNC Greensboro Spartans. The last time the Spartans were on the court the team snapped a two-game losing skid with a thrilling, 61-57 victory over Elon. The win pushed UNCG's league mark to 4-3, and also brought the team's road ledger to a respectable 4-5 on the season. As for the Cougars, they fell to an even 9-9 on the year with a 74-66 loss to Furman this past Saturday. Although the Cougars are currently sitting at .500 on the season, the team has played well at home, posting a 4-1 ledger at the Kresse Arena. Next up for Charleston will be a very tough home contest against Davidson. Charleston has won four of the mast five meetings against UNC Greensboro, and comes into this matchup with a convincing, 16-4 edge over the Spartans.
It is no secret that the Spartans rely heavily on the play of Kyle Hines, offensively and defensively. Hines heads into tonight's matchup averaging 17.9 ppg and 9.2 rpg. At the same time, the forward is also leading the team with 27 steals and 47 blocks. Kevin Oleksiak and Mikko Koivisto have also made some contributions on the season, netting 10.5 and 10.4 ppg, respectively. Against Elon this past weekend, the Spartans only scored 61 points, but it was just enough to slip past the Phoenix by a four-point margin. Hines posted his eighth double-double of the season, netting 22 points, while collecting 11 rebounds. Ben Stywall added 16 points to go along with eight rebounds.
Four players are currently posting double figures for Charleston, which heads into this matchup averaging a solid 74.3 ppg. White is leading the squad with 13.3 ppg, despite shooting below 40.0 percent from the field. The guard also has a team-best 57 assists. Andrew Goudelock has earned himself a starting spot by posting 12.7 ppg. The guard was so productive off the bench throughout the season, he has started the last three games. The monster in the paint for Charleston has been Jermaine Johnson, who is contributing 12.4 ppg to go along with a team-best 9.1 rpg. Dustin Scott has also done well, as the guard is chipping in 10.6 ppg. Unfortunately the Cougars were not at their best this past weekend, as the team fell to Furman, 74-66. In the loss, Charleston shot over 44 percent, but made just 8-of-27 three-point attempts, and just 4-of-5 shots from the foul line. White led the way with 16 points, while Scott and Marcus Hammond tallied 11 points apiece.
Expect the Cougars to bounce back in this contest. College of Charleston has far too many weapons offensively and should be able to post a victory over UNCG in front of a home crowd.
