GAME NOTES: Colonial Athletic Association foes are set to meet tonight, as the Northeastern Huskies find themselves in North Carolina for a clash with the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks at Trask Coliseum. Northeastern took a hard-fought 73-69 overtime victory against Delaware the last time out, snapping a two-game slide. The win improved Northeastern's season and conference ledger, as it checks into tonight's matchup at 7-10 overall and 3-4 in league play. As for UNC-Wilmington, it has won two straight, including a 68-61 road besting of Georgia State on Saturday night. The win was the third in five games for UNCW, which enters tonight's contest sporting an 11-8 record on the year and a 4-3 mark in CAA action. This bout marks just the fourth all-time meeting between these two schools on the hardwood, with the Seahawks clinging to a 2-1 advantage.
Northeastern made good on 21-of-22 free throws after the break in Saturday's overtime win over Delaware. The Huskies also scored 20 points off 22 UD turnovers, and out-rebounded the Blue Hens by a 32-28 margin. The Huskies shot just 40.8 percent from the field during the contest, but kept pace with a 30- of-36 performance at the foul line. Matt Janning poured in a game-high 20 points and dished out seven assists to lead the Huskies, while Nkem Ojougboh added 17 points to go with nine rebounds. Manny Adako joined the duo in double digits, chipping in 12 points while grabbing six boards. Janning is responsible for a club-best 15.9 ppg this season, while Ojougboh checks in with 11.6 ppg and sits first in rebounding (7.6 rpg). Adako rounds out the trio of double- digit scorers with 11.5 ppg.
UNC-Wilmington currently boasts four starters who average double digits in scoring, beginning with T.J. Carter and his 15.7 ppg. Daniel Fountain checks in with 14.1 ppg, while Vladimir Kuljanin is responsible for 13.4 points and a team-high 9.5 rebounds per game. Todd Hendley rounds out the Seahawks' top offensive threats with 13.1 ppg to go with 5.6 rpg. UNCW held Georgia State to a mere 35.8 percent shooting effort in Saturday's seven-point victory, while shooting a respectable 45.2 percent itself. The Seahawks also added a 24-of-29 effort from the charity stripe and forced 14 turnovers. Carter led the way for UNCW by scoring 17 points to go with five assists, followed by Kuljanin, who netted 16 points to go with a game-high 15 rebounds. Fountain and Hendley also hit double figures in the victory, netting 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Give the edge to UNCW here, as the Seahawks not only will have the home crowd behind them, but bring a balanced attack led by Carter that Northeastern simply won't be able to handle.
