GAME NOTES: Winless away from home this season, the Colorado State Rams give it yet another shot tonight as they challenge the Air Force Falcons in a Mountain West Conference battle at Clune Arena. Colorado State has lost all seven true road games here in 2007-08 and is 0-3 in neutral-site events leading up to this contest. On Saturday, the Rams were handed their fourth straight loss and the eighth in nine tries overall in a 70-58 setback to TCU in Fort Worth. As for the Falcons, their weekend wasn't much better as they put up a mere 44 points in a 15-point loss to New Mexico in The Pit. The setback snapped a brief two- game win streak for Air Force, the academy playing very well at home this season with eight wins in nine opportunities. Colorado State is in control of the all-time series with the Falcons by a count of 61-27 however, Air Force has won six in a row and nine of the last 10 encounters with the Rams, including a 67-58 victory at home in the most recent decision a season ago.
Marcus Walker scored a game-high 25 points, knocking down a perfect 10-of-10 at the free-throw line, but he shot just 7-of-20 from the field and was a miserable 1-of-9 behind the three-point line in the loss to TCU over the weekend. The team as a whole shot just 35.3 percent from the floor and a dismal 3-of-21 beyond the arc. Walker has been the lone offensive spark for the team this season, leading the way in scoring in each of the last six games, which has led to his current average of 17.2 ppg. The only player to have started all 17 contests, Walker is a 48.9 percent shooter from the field and is 82.6 percent accurate at the free-throw line. Willis Gardner checks in with 12.5 ppg, but between the two of them they are still having trouble making up for the loss of Stuart Creason who has been on the sidelines with a foot injury.
A punishing and unforgiving defense for the Lobos completely dominated Air Force on Saturday, holding the Falcons to just 5-of-20 shooting from the floor and 2-of-11 behind the three-point line in the first half. For the game, AFA made a mere 11 total field goals and was never a threat to upset UNM in Albuquerque. Anwar Johnson was the only player to score in double figures for the visitors with his 10 points, eight of which came at the free-throw line. Tim Anderson, who entered the game averaging 15 ppg, posted just five to go with seven rebounds. Anderson checks in at 14.5 ppg, followed by Andrew Henke and his 10.8 ppg in logging 27 minutes per game off the bench. Henke is also the leading rebounder for the unit with just over four and a half boards per outing, which means the team is trailing opponents by an average of 4.5 rpg. One of the top defensive clubs in the nation yet again, Air Force is allowing only 56.8 ppg, but scoring 60.9 ppg which means there isn't much room for error.
The Rams have been awful outside of Fort Collins this season, which is more than enough reason to lean in favor of Air Force tonight, especially with the kind of defense the academy is throwing out on the floor on a regular basis.
