GAME NOTES: The 19th-ranked Texas Longhorns, fresh off a narrow victory, hit the road to do battle with the Oklahoma State Cowboys in Big 12 action this evening. Colorado invaded Austin on Saturday and pushed Texas to the limit, but the Longhorns avoided an 0-2 start to Big 12 play by posting a 69-67 triumph over the Buffaloes. Texas had lost three of its previous five games heading into Saturday's matchup, so the hope is that the victory has restored any confidence that may have been lost. The Longhorns have only played three true road games to date, and two have resulted in wins. As for Oklahoma State, it has lost its last two games, including a 73-66 setback to Iowa State on Saturday. The Cowboys are just 1-2 in league play, but they figure to enter this game with plenty of confidence, as all nine of their home contests this season have resulted in victory. Texas owns a 36-34 edge in the all-time series with Oklahoma State, and the Longhorns won both meetings last season.
After the first half, Texas trailed Colorado by nine points at intermission, and the home crowd was undoubtedly concerned. Fortunately, the big-time players on the Longhorn roster came through in a big way, starting with point guard D.J. Augustin. One of the best players in the nation at his position, Augustin racked up 25 points and five assists while committing a mere one turnover in 39 minutes of action. Backcourt mate A.J. Abrams added 17 points for the 'Horns despite 6-of-19 shooting from the field, and Connor Atchley finished with 15 points on a 6-of-7 effort from his center position. Augustin is averaging 20.5 ppg and 6.2 apg, and it is hard to find another point guard who can score and dish as effectively. Abrams is netting 18.4 ppg, giving Texas one of the nation's premier backcourt duos. Damion James checks in with 14.1 ppg, and he is ripping down 10.9 rpg.
James Anderson, Terrel Harris and Marcus Dove have started all 17 games this season, and each player is scoring in double figures. James Anderson leads the squad with 15.5 ppg, while Harris (11.8 ppg) and Dove (10.9 ppg) add balance. Harris has more than twice as many turnovers than assists, and the same can be said of Anderson. Even Dove has nearly twice as many giveaways as assists, and the team is committing nearly 20 turnovers per game. Oklahoma State shot just 5-of-21 from three-point range and turned the ball over 16 times in the loss to Iowa State on Saturday. A 27-11 deficit also hurt the cause for the Cowboys. Harris and Dove both scored 17 points in the loss, and Obi Muonelo added 16 points off the bench.
Although Oklahoma State will be playing at home today, Texas is the better team and will earn a hard-fought victory. Keep an eye on Augustin, as he is a tremendous talent.
