GAME NOTES: Riding their longest winning streak of the season, the Davidson Wildcats invade the Ramsey Center, where they will take on the Western Carolina Catamounts in Southern Conference play tonight. The Wildcats come into the tilt red-hot, as they have won six straight games, with five of those victories coming by double-figure margins. On Saturday, Davidson faced off with one of the top teams in the league and it showed its superiority with an 85-58 trouncing of Chattanooga. The triumph kept the Wildcats perfect in league play at 8-0 and marked their 18th consecutive regular season conference victory. Now at 10-6 overall, Davidson hits the road, where it has gone a perfect 4-0 against SoCon foes. As for WCU, it has been out of action since January 12th, when it suffered an 85-55 beating at Chattanooga. It was the fourth loss in the past five outings by the Catamounts, who dropped to 5-11 overall and 1-5 in conference action. The team though, now returns home, where it has gone a decent 4-2 thus far. In terms of the all-time series, Davidson owns a 33-18 advantage over WCU and it has won seven of the last eight meetings.
The Wildcats are one of the premier scoring teams in the SoCon, as they are netting a hardy 79.8 ppg on 46.9 percent shooting from the floor. Stephen Curry is arguably the top player in the conference and he ranks among the top scorers in the entire nation with an average of 23.8 ppg. He is making good on 39.3 percent of his three-point attempts and he is also solid defender, recording a team-best 33 steals. Jason Richards is a distant second in scoring at 12.8 ppg, but that is because he has been in charge of setting up Curry, dishing out a nation-high 8.7 apg. In the team's last game, Curry poured in 37 points on 8- of-14 three-pointers, as Davidson routed Chattanooga over the weekend. Richards chipped in with 13 points and he doled out a game-high nine assists. The Wildcats sank 50.8 percent of their field goal tries and they also scored 29 points off 23 Chattanooga' turnovers.
The Catamounts are averaging 65.2 ppg for the season, but that number could be a lot higher if they weren't shooting a sub par 38.5 percent from the floor. Brandon Giles though, has had success in making 41.5 percent of his long-range attempts and he leads the team in scoring at 13.2 ppg. Michael Porrini ranks second in scoring (11.5 ppg) and rebounding (5.4 rpg) and he tops the roster in assists with 3.4 apg. In the squad's prior contest, WCU shot a horrific 28.2 percent from the floor, as it was blown out at Chattanooga. The team was completely dominated on the boards, 59-31, and it was also outscored at the foul line, 27-8. Giles paced the Catamounts in defeat with 15 points, although he went just 1-of-9 from long distance.
Davidson is clearly the better team and behind the efforts of Curry and company, it should have little trouble getting past a WCU club that could be a bit rusty from a long layoff.
