GAME NOTES: Long-time rivals take to the floor tonight, as the James Madison Dukes head to Norfolk for a Colonial Athletic Association clash with the Old Dominion Monarchs. James Madison stopped a two-game slide on Saturday night by notching an impressive 93-74 victory over UNCW, snapping a 14-game losing streak against the Seahawks. The Dukes moved to 3-2 in league play with the win, and improved their 2007-08 ledger to 10-5. As for Old Dominion, it dropped an 81-74 decision at Delaware on Saturday in a game that went to double- overtime. It was ODU's second loss in its last three outings, and the defeat dropped the club to 8-9 on the season and 3-2 in league play. The Monarchs lead the all-time series with the Dukes by a 45-23 margin.
Abdulai Jalloh poured in a game-high 22 points to go with seven rebounds to lead the Dukes in Saturday night's 19-point victory over UNC-Wilmington, which tied the largest JMU winning margin over the Seahawks in series history. Juwann James and Pierre Curtis added 18 points each in the contest, with James grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds as well, and Terrance Carter netted 17 points. JMU shot a red-hot 57.9 percent from the floor and held the UNCW to a mere 36.8 percent, including 6-of-25 from beyond the arc. The Dukes currently boast four starters averaging double digits in scoring, starting with Jalloh and his 15.5 ppg. Carter has been good for 15.1 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, and James follows with 12.6 ppg. Rounding out the offensive-minded quartet is Curtis and his 11.7 ppg. He also leads the club in assists with 66.
Old Dominion averages 64.9 ppg this season, and claims just one double-digit scorer. Gerald Lee is netting 12.9 ppg, and he is also responsible for 6.4 rpg. Brandon Johnson scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead ODU in the recent setback at Delaware, and Lee tallied 18 points to go with eight boards. Brian Henderson joined the duo in double figures with 13 points and he was a monster on the glass with 10 boards. ODU shot a meager 37.7 percent from the floor, and was even worse in the extra sessions, hitting just 33.3 percent. The club was dreadful from downtown, dropping just 5-of-21 three-point tries. The Monarchs gave the Blue Hens 17 points as a result of 16 turnovers, and converted just 68.0 percent (17-of-25) of the attempts at the charity stripe.
ODU has been inconsistent this season, and hasn't strung together consecutive victories in more than a month. JMU, on the other hand, is a balanced team and should be able to pull out a road victory here.
