GAME NOTES: Leaders in the South Division of the Southern Conference, the Davidson Wildcats try to keep their unblemished record intact tonight as they visit the slumping Furman Paladins at Timmons Arena in Greenville. Since losing a non-conference bout against NC State back on December 21st, the Wildcats have reeled off four straight victories, including an 85-50 rout of Wofford on Saturday. The only other team in the SoCon without a league loss is Chattanooga, which is far ahead of the rest of the programs in the North Division at the moment. As for Furman, it is just a step above the basement in the South Division, a winner of just one of its seven SoCon outings thus far. Since putting up back-to-back wins against the likes of Howard and Western Carolina, the Paladins have dropped three straight. The most recent loss for the team took place on Saturday when Elon slipped by with a 60-58 decision after it had been decided that an apparent game-winning three-pointer by Furman's Tony Anderson was waved off. Since the series began back in 1909, Davidson has been in control against the Paladins, posting a mark of 87-60.
Stephen Curry missed just three of his 13 field goal attempts, finishing with 26 points in 24 minutes as the Wildcats streaked to the win over Wofford on Saturday night in Spartanburg. Will Archambault contributed 15 points in as many minutes off the bench and Jason Richards 12 points as he knocked down all four of his three-point tries in the victory. As a team, Davidson converted 10- of-20 behind the three-point line to make up for just three opportunities at the charity stripe. All but once this season Curry has led the team in scoring, the sharp shooter accounting for 23.6 ppg at this point. Curry is getting a lot of assistance from Richards (12.9 ppg) who is tops in the nation entering this week with his 8.8 assists per outing. Almost as remarkable is the fact that he has close to three times as many dishes as he does turnovers in almost 35 minutes per game. If not for 66.2 percent shooting at the free-throw line, Davidson would be posting much more than 79.9 ppg.
For one moment in time Tony Anderson must have considered himself the king of Furman basketball on Saturday, but once the officials waved off what appeared to be the game-winning three-pointer, he became just another guy on a below- average team. However, all the news was not bad for the Paladins because Alex Opacic managed to log the first double-double of his career with team-highs of 20 points and 12 rebounds in the losing effort. George Brozos and Justin Dehm each contributed nine points. The rebounding total by Opacic mark the first time this season that any single player on the squad has recorded double digits in that department in any one game, which says a lot about the squad's mere 29.3 rpg this season. A 45.4 percent three-point shooter, Dehm is first on the scoring list for the team with his 11.6 ppg, while Opacic places second at 10.1 ppg, although he has converted just 8-of-28 chances behind the three-point line.
Considering how poor the Paladins have looked this season and the fact that Davidson has won all but one of the previous 21 meetings with Furman, there should be no doubt when it comes to picking a winner tonight.
