GAME NOTES: Mid-American Conference play will take place tonight at Savage Hall, as the Toledo Rockets host the Central Michigan Chippewas. The Chippewas had their small two-game winning streak snapped the last time they were on the court, as the team suffered a tough, 82-71 setback to Ball State in Muncie. With the setback the team is now a meager 3-6 on the road and just 1-1 in league action. As for the Rockets, they also had their two-game winning streak snapped, as they fell to Northern Illinois, 78-62. The Rockets are just 4-10 overall on the year, but all four victories have come at Savage Hall. Toledo, which is 0-9 away from home this season, will be on the road for five of its next seven games. The Rockets hold a commanding, 50-26 advantage over CMU in the all-time series and have won the last nine matchups against the Chippewas.
Other than Giordan Watson, the Chippewas lack a strong punch offensively. Watson heads into this game shooting an impressive 43.6 percent from behind the arc and is averaging 15.9 ppg. The only other player netting double figures for CMU is Nate Minnoy, as the forward is chipping in 11.0 ppg, while also pulling down 4.9 rpg. In the recent 11-point loss to Ball State, the Chippewas shot 45.0 percent from the floor, but just 9-of-17 from the foul line. Watson led the way once again, netting 12 points to go along with six assists. Jordan Bitzer contributed 11 points, while Jeremy Allen chipped in 10. As for Minnoy, he posted nine points in the loss. Overall, CMU has been mediocre at best, averaging 72.4 ppg, while shooting 46.5 percent.
As for the Rockets, they have been a dud offensively, producing a meager 58.8 ppg, while shooting only 40.3 percent from the floor, and an equally worse 29.1 percent from long range. Tyrone Kent has been the only consistent scorer for Toledo, as the guard is averaging 18.1 ppg. Jonathan Amos, who is shooting 47.4 percent on the season is second on the squad with 12.1 ppg. The offensive struggles for Toledo continued this past Sunday, as the squad tallied just 62 points in a 16-point setback to Northern Illinois. Toledo shot only 38.2 percent from the floor and connected on just 5-of-24 attempts from behind the arc. The team also struggled at the foul line, netting just 15-of-31 attempts. Amos led the way in the loss with 17 points, while Kent tallied 16 points, despite netting only 5-of-16 shots from the field.
The Rockets have done a solid job defensively, and if the team can contain Watson, Toledo should stand a good chance of claiming a win in front of its home crowd.
