GAME NOTES: The Baylor Bears look to continue their outstanding play this evening when they take on the Oklahoma State Cowboys in a Big 12 showdown at the Ferrell Center. After opening the season with a mediocre 5-5 ledger, the Cowboys have been red-hot, winning five consecutive games, including a strong 74-55 victory over Texas Tech this past Saturday. The Pokes, who are 1-0 in league play, struggled in the two previous seasons, posting a mere 12-20 ledger against Big 12 foes. As for the Bears, their 13-2 start is the best opening for this program since the 2000-01 campaign when the team began the year with a 14-2 ledger. Baylor has won eight of its last nine games, and that includes two straight victories over Brown (72-62) and Iowa State (74-67). The Bears have played extremely well at home this year, winning eight of their nine contests in front of the crowd at the Ferrell Center. Last season the Bears snapped a seven-game losing skid to Oklahoma State with an 86-82 victory over the Pokes. However, despite the loss, Oklahoma State still holds a commanding, 46-13 lead over Baylor.
The Pokes put tremendous defensive pressure on Texas Tech this past Saturday, holding the Red Raiders to a mere 36.7 percent shooting, which included an equally poor 1-of-8 clip from behind the arc. Throughout the season Oklahoma State has done well defensively, limiting its opponents to just 64.9 ppg, along with a 42.9 percent shooting effort. Not to be overlooked however, is the team's play offensively, with the Pokes averaging 72.7 ppg. James Anderson has been the main scoring threat for Oklahoma State, netting 16.5 ppg. Terrel Harris is next in line with 10.7 ppg, while Marcus Dove has been solid in the paint, posting 10.5 ppg to go along with a team-best 5.5 rpg. In the win over Texas Tech, Obi Muonelo scored a team-high 21 points, while Ibrahima Thomas contributed 16 points and eight rebounds. Anderson added 13 points in the win, while Dove chipped in 10 points to go along with six boards.
The Bears have been ferocious offensively this season, and head into this matchup averaging 80.3 ppg. Currently there are five players posting double figures for Baylor, with Curtis Jerrells leading the way at 13.7 ppg. Jerrells also has a team-best 55 assists on the season. Kevin Rogers has been the go-to guy in the paint, netting 12.3 ppg to go along with a team-best 6.7 rpg. LaceDarius Dunn has been a pleasant surprise off the bench, netting 12.2 ppg, while averaging a tad over 20 minutes per game. Henry Dugat and Aaron Bruce have also made their presence felt, chipping in 10.9 and 10.8 ppg, respectively. The last time the Bears were on the floor the team grabbed a seven-point win over Iowa State. Rogers and Dugat both posted 15 points and nine rebounds apiece, while Bruce and Tweety Carter contributed 14 points apiece. As for Jerrells, he tallied 12 points on a 6-of-14 shooting clip from the field.
This should be a very tough matchup between the Cowboys and Bears. Baylor has played well at home and has far too many options offensively for Oklahoma State to contain.
