GAME NOTES: Hitting the road for just the third time this entire season, the Nebraska Cornhuskers open their Big 12 Conference road slate tonight versus Colorado at the Coors Events Center in Boulder. Aside from a quick trip to Western Kentucky last month, this is actually just the second time that the Huskers will be out of the state, having played their other road game in Omaha versus Creighton back in November. More recently, the team was pitted against third-ranked Kansas on Saturday at the Devaney Center, a meeting that ended in a 79-58 loss for Nebraska. The setback snapped a less-than-impressive six-game win streak for the squad, with opponents like Savannah State, North Carolina Central and Alcorn State on the hit list. As for the Buffaloes, they too opened their conference schedule over the weekend and began the run with a loss to Texas A&M by a score of 86-69 on the road. The defeat was the second in a row for Colorado, which is a game under .500 at home at the moment (3-4). The teams split two meetings a season ago, each winning on its own floor, which means Nebraska now leads the all-time series by a count of 72-68.
Operating with a four-guard offense, the Cornhuskers placed a lot of pressure on Aleks Maric to perform in the paint and he ended up with a respectable 19 points, but just four rebounds in the loss to the Jayhawks. Ryan Anderson was the only other player on the team to score in double figures for Nebraska, posting 12 points on just 4-of-12 shooting from the field. The other three starters had games that they'd much rather forget, combining to go 1-of-13 from the floor for a total of five points. With such a weak non-conference schedule yet again this season, the Huskers have managed to pad their stats rather easily. At the moment the squad is giving up just 55.3 ppg and is outscoring opponents by more than 16 ppg. Maric is in for a team-best 16.4 ppg and is also first with 8.1 rpg and 26 blocked shots. His 61 percent shooting from the field is better than his 58 percent effort at the free-throw line, something that will come back to hurt him and the Huskers as the Big 12 slate rolls on.
Except for Marcus King-Stockton who finished with six points, every starter for the Buffaloes hit for double figures in the loss to Texas A&M in College Station on Saturday. Cory Higgins accounted for 15 points and five boards, Xavier Silas and Richard Roby had 14 points apiece and Marcus Hall finished with 12 points and six assists in the setback. The team shot a sizzling 61.7 percent from the field, but was just 4-of-12 behind the three-point line and ended up with a scant 16 rebounds. Roby continues to lead the program in both scoring and rebounding after 15 games with his 16.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest, shooting an impressive 82 percent at the free-throw line along the way. Hall checks in with 12.8 ppg and Silas an additional 10.9 ppg, the former also responsible for team highs with 62 assists and 32 steals. A team focused on defense, the Buffs are giving up just 61.9 ppg this season, but with just 64.7 ppg themselves the squad doesn't leave a lot of room for error.
It may not be tonight, but the Huskers are going to find out rather quickly just how much talent they really have when comparing themselves to the rest of the Big 12 because up until now there's no way they could have taken themselves seriously with the schedule they were handed.
