GAME NOTES: A couple of programs searching for just their second Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win of the season hit the floor at the Hynes Athletics Center in New Rochelle this afternoon, as the Iona Gaels welcome the Saint Peter's Peacocks to town. Both squads have league marks of just 1-4 and played on Friday night. The Peacocks, who are a miserable 0-9 on the road thus far in 2007-08, were struck down by Marist two nights ago in an 86-71 decision. The loss was the second in a row for the team and the ninth in the last 10 tries overall. As for the Gaels, they opened the season with a six-game slide and are dangerously close to matching that streak, having dropped five in a row heading into action today. Iona hosted Rider on Friday night and could do little to keep the Broncs from stealing a 72-64 decision. Iona leads the all-time series with the Peacocks by a count of 50-44, but it was Saint Peter's that swept the two meetings a season ago, first with a 59-52 victory at home and then a 54-52 decision in this building.
Darrell Lampley scored a team-high 15 points off the bench on Friday night, but he had to shoot 5-of-14 from the field in order to do so in the loss to Marist on the road. Todd Sowell added 14 points and Wesley Jenkins 13, but not one of the three double-digit scorers managed to log a single assist as the team came up with a mere six dishes the entire night. A starter in every game this season, Sowell is responsible for a team-high 13.0 ppg and is also one of the league's best rebounders with close to 11 boards per outing as well. Jenkins checks in with 12.6 ppg, even though he is shooting better from three- point range (.381) than he is the field overall (.376). The most potent of the perimeter shooters for the program, Raul Orta (11.4 ppg) has made good on 45.6 percent of his three-point tries this season.
The starting five for the Gaels two nights ago was anything but offensive- minded, as only Dexter Gray managed to break into double digits with his 12 points, adding a team-high nine rebounds as well for the losing squad. Kyle Camper came of the bench to offer up 13 points, but his efforts were not nearly enough as the Gaels lost yet again. Gray has made his way to the top of the scoring list for Iona, dropping in 11.8 ppg, while also leading the group on the glass as well with almost six boards per game. Milan Prodanovic and Devon Clarke are responsible for 10.2 ppg each, the latter doing his damage in just 19 minutes per game. However, for someone who seems to be in possession of the ball quite a bit, Clarke's mere four assists in more than 300 minutes of playing time are simply not acceptable.
There's nothing special about either one of these teams right now and certainly the Gaels should have the advantage just for the fact that they are at home. However, the Peacocks are going to have to break through on the road at some point, so now is as good a time as any.
