GAME NOTES: The seventh-ranked Georgetown Hoyas put a four-game win streak on the line this weekend, as they welcome the Connecticut Huskies to the Verizon Center for a Big East showdown. The Hoyas haven't lost since December 22nd when they suffered their only setback of the season, an 85-71 decision at Memphis. The team has since rallied with four consecutive victories, including two straight to begin Big East play. Georgetown opened up defense of its Big East title with a 58-46 victory over Rutgers last weekend and followed that with Tuesday's 76-60 win at DePaul. Connecticut isn't thought of as a national powerhouse anymore, but the team remains dangerous, having won 11 of its first 14 games this year. The Huskies have won six of their last season games and moved to 2-1 in league play with Tuesday's 81-65 win over St. John's. This is the 58th all-time meeting between these two teams, with Georgetown clinging to a 30-27 advantage. The Huskies have closed the gap considerably, with wins in 11 of the last 12 meetings. Georgetown's lone win over that stretch came last March, a 59-46 decision at the Verizon Center.
It was the Price and Adrien show last time out for UConn, as A.J. Price poured in a career-high 25 points and Jeff Adrien recorded his seventh double-double of the season, netting 20 points and grabbing 14 rebounds, in a 16-point win over the Red Storm. Other notable performances came from Stanley Robinson, who finished with 15 points and eight rebounds and Jerome Dyson, who tied the school record with nine steals, to go along with 12 points. Putting points on the scoreboard has not been a problem for the Huskies this year, with the team averaging 82.1 ppg on a solid .467 shooting. Dyson is shooting under 40 percent on the year, but leads the team in scoring nonetheless, at 15.4 ppg. Adrien has been a monster in the low post, averaging 14.1 ppg and leading the team with 9.2 rpg. Price has proved to be both a solid scorer (13.8 ppg) and deft distributor (6.2 apg). Robinson (11.6 ppg, 6.2 rpg) and Hasheem Thabeet (10.4 ppg, 8.4 rpg) join Adrien to form one of the conference's top frontcourts.
Georgetown's big man in the middle finally broke out against DePaul this week, as 7-2 Roy Hibbert recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds, in the 16-point win. The perimeter guys did the rest, with Austin Freeman netting 13 points and Jonathan Wallace and Jessie Sapp adding 12 points apiece. The play in the first half decided the game, as Georgetown shot .655 from the floor in the first 20 minutes and took a 21-point lead into the break. The Hoyas have been successful at both ends of the court this season, leading the nation in field-goal percentage (.526), ranking second in field-goal percentage defense (.352) and ranking eighth in scoring defense (55.2 ppg). Hibbert has not yet peaked on the season, but still leads the team in scoring (12.0 ppg), field- goal percentage (.618), rebounding (6.4 rpg) and blocked shots (27). DaJuan Summers is a nice complement up front with 11.8 ppg and 5.6 rpg. Wallace (10.5 ppg) is the only other Hoya averaging double figures at this time, although Freeman (9.8 ppg) and Sapp (9.4 ppg) are eager to join the group.
The Huskies are no pushover and will present quite a challenge for the Hoyas this weekend. However, Georgetown is playing stifling defense and that should create enough opportunities at the other end for the hometown team to get the victory here.
