GAME NOTES: The Fairfield Stags will try to continue their strong play when they meet the Loyola-Maryland Greyhounds this evening in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tilt at the Arena at Harbor Yards. Since opening the season with four wins in their first six games, the Greyhounds have stumbled, losing seven of their last nine matchups, including an embarrassing, 90-60 setback to Kansas. Loyola has been dreadful on the road this season, losing all seven matchups away from home, which is surprising, considering the team accumulated a 16-15 road mark over the two previous campaigns. As for the Stags, they have won three of their last four games, including a hard-fought, 53-52 win over Siena this past Tuesday. Although Fairfield is just 5-9 overall on the year, the team has performed well against league opponents, posting a 3-1 ledger, including topping Loyola 69-67 a week ago. In terms of the all-time series between the two schools on the hardwood, the Stags own a commanding, 30-12 edge.
Gerald Brown has been the main scoring option for Loyola on the season, as the guard is averaging 18.1 ppg, while also collecting 5.1 rpg. However, despite his offensive presence, the Greyhounds are only posting 68.5 ppg, while shooting a tad over 40.0 percent. Marquis Sullivan is the only other player on the roster that has produced offensively, as he enters tonight's game netting 11.5 ppg. Not much went right for Loyola this past Tuesday, as the team was dismantled by Kansas, 90-60. In the loss, the Greyhounds shot a mere 32.8 percent from the field and connected on just 8-of-25 attempts from long range. Brown was only 4-of-13 from the floor, but still led the team with 13 points. Brown also collected eight boards, but also committed eight turnovers. Sullivan added 12 points, while Gren Manning contributed 10 in his first game of the season.
Offensively the Stags have struggled at points during the season. After 14 games, Fairfield is netting a mere 62.9 ppg, while shooting just 41.0 percent from the field. Only Jonathan Han is netting double figures on the season, as the guard is posting 11.7 ppg, while also leading the team with 77 assists. Greg Nero is second on the squad with 9.9 ppg, but he tends to disappear at times during games. Fairfield only scored 53 points in its last contest, but it was enough for the Stags to get past Siena by a one-point margin. The team shot 43.1 percent from the field and overcame 17 turnovers in the win. Nero led the way with 10 points, while Herbie Allen tallied nine. As for Han, he finished with just three points and six assists, but also committed six turnovers.
Fairfield defeated Loyola just this past Friday and even though the Stags are home, do not be surprised if the Greyhounds grab their first road win of the season tonight.
