GAME NOTES: Southern Conference action will take place this evening as the Georgia Southern Eagles will try to return to the win column when they host the College of Charleston Cougars at the Hanner Fieldhouse. The Cougars have pushed their ledger on the season to an even 7-7, thanks to three victories in their last four games. The last time Charleston was on the court the team grabbed a solid, 78-65 victory over Elon. Since the beginning of the 2004-05 campaign the Cougars are 34-19 in league play and that includes the team's 2-2 mark in SoCon action this year. As for the Eagles, they opened the year with nine wins in their first 11 games, but since then the squad has dropped three straight games, including a 79-67 setback to UNC-Greensboro this past Saturday. The Eagles have played well at home this season, posting a 4-1 mark at Hanner Fieldhouse. The Cougars have won two of the last three matchups against Georgia Southern and now have a slim, 18-16 edge over the Eagles.
The Cougars possess plenty of scoring options this season, beginning with Tony White Jr. White Jr. is one of four players for Charleston averaging double figures, as the guard is netting 13.4 ppg, despite shooting 36.8 percent from the field. Jermaine Johnson has been the top player in the paint for the Cougars, and comes into this game, averaging 12.6 ppg and a team-best 8.9 rpg. Andrew Goudelock has yet to start a game for the Cougars, but that has not stopped him from posting an impressive 12.6 ppg off the bench. Dustin Scott rounds out the double-figure scorers with 10.0 ppg and is also pulling down 6.9 rpg as well. The last time Charleston was on the floor the team grabbed a 13- point victory over Elon. In the win the team shot a sizzling 53.8 percent and was led by Scott, who tallied 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. White Jr. added 19 points, while Goudelock contributed 15 points off the bench. Johnson also posted a double-double in the win, scoring 12 points, while collecting 10 boards.
The Eagles shot a pathetic 27.8 percent from the field in the opening half of their recent matchup against UNC Greensboro. The team could not recover from its early shooting woes and finished with just 67 points in a 12-point setback. Georgia Southern posted a mere 34.8 percent shooting effort and made only 5-of-19 attempts from behind the arc. Louis Graham poured in 24 points in the loss and also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. Graham has been the top performer for the Eagles, as the guard is leading the team with 13.9 ppg and 6.8 rpg. Graham received help from Julian Allen and Matthew Fields in the loss to UNCG, as the two players contributed 17 and 10 points respectively. Although Georgia Southern has struggled over the past couple games, the team is still averaging a mediocre 72.5 ppg.
The Eagles should be able to finally break out of their recent slump. Charleston will likely keep the game close, but expect the Eagles to pull off a narrow win on their home floor.
