GAME NOTES: Playing at home for just the fourth time this season, the Northeastern Huskies set up shop in Matthews Arena against Colonial Athletic Association foe Drexel tonight. On Saturday, Northeastern held on to defeat Georgia State in league play by a score of 64-62, snapping the team's three- game slide. Tonight the squad shoots for back-to-back wins for just the second time in 2007-08. As for the Dragons, a team that began this season with five wins in six tries, they lost for the second time in three attempts over the weekend when they allowed Delaware to capture a 67-63 victory in Philadelphia. With the setback Drexel is now 1-2 in conference play, having also been crushed by George Mason back in November by a score of 85-38 on the road. The all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood leans in favor of the Dragons, 29-11.
Frank Elegar had a monster game versus Delaware with career highs of 33 points and 17 rebounds before fouling out, and still the Dragons lost to the Blue Hens on Saturday. Elegar, who also blocked four shots, was as much at fault for Drexel as anyone else as he made just 7-of-17 chances at the free-throw line, the team hitting 15-of-31 on the day. Scott Rodgers kicked in 13 points as the only other double-digit scorer for the squad, but he was also guilty of six of its 11 turnovers. Despite being a game over .500 at the moment, the Dragons are scoring a scant 60.1 ppg, shooting a mere 60.3 percent at the charity stripe along the way. Even with his huge effort over the weekend, Elegar is still scoring just 15.4 ppg and is pulling down a team-high 8.1 rpg as well. No one else on the team is currently hitting for double digits in the scoring department, with Tramayne Hawthorne knocking on the door with his 9.9 ppg and Gerald Colds close behind with 9.2 ppg.
In a game that saw nine ties and six lead changes, it was a pair of free throws by Matt Janning that put the Huskies over the top in their two-point win against Georgia State on Saturday. Janning, who had just the two free throws on the day, finished with 12 points, trailing Manny Adako (18 points) and Nkem Ojougboh (14). The squad made a mere 2-of-14 chances behind the three-point line, but made up for it with 16-of-20 at the charity stripe. Adako, the leading scorer in four of the last five outings, is currently second on the team with his 12.2 ppg, trailing only Janning and his 16.0 ppg. Adako, who is making only 64.7 percent at the free-throw line, is performing almost as well from the floor overall at 63.6 percent, yet the unit overall is converting just 41.2 percent from the floor and 27.8 percent behind the three-point line.
Drexel is a one-trick pony this season and unless the Dragons can get Elegar some help, the team is going to continue to struggle until the end of the campaign.
