GAME NOTES: The Southeast Missouri State Redhawks will try to remain perfect in league action when they host the Murray State Racers this evening in an Ohio Valley Conference matchup at the Regional Events Center. The Racers snapped a four-game losing skid with a strong, 92-88 victory over Tennessee State this past Thursday. Murray State is 6-7 on the season, but away from home the team has been much worse, losing five of its six games on the road. As for the Redhawks, they have won six of their last seven games, including back-to-back victories over Central Methodist (76-63) and Eastern Kentucky (66-55). SEMO has been extremely tough to beat at home, as the team is a perfect 6-0 at the Show Me Center. Over the two previous seasons, the Redhawks accumulated a terrible 13-27 ledger in conference play, but this year the squad is an outstanding 5-0 thus far. In terms of the all-time series between the two schools on the hardwood, the Racers have a commanding, 41-16 advantage.
The Racers have had some trouble finding consistency at the offensive end of the floor, as the squad is netting 69.8 ppg, while shooting 48.4 percent from the field. However, the last time Murray State was on the court the team exploded offensively, scoring 92 points en route to a four-point win. In the victory the Racers shot 56.4 percent from the field and connected on 9-of-15 attempts from behind the arc. Danero Thomas, who is pacing the team with 12.7 ppg on the season, led the way in the victory over Tennessee State, scoring 16 points, while also grabbing seven rebounds. The trio of Bruce Carter, Tony Easley and Tyler Holloway each posted 15 points in the win, while Marvin Williams tallied 13 points. Holloway and Easley have also made solid contributions on the season, averaging 10.7 and 10.5 ppg, respectively.
It has been a strange season for the Redhawks. The team is currently 10-5 on the year, but is allowing more points (78.5 ppg) than it is producing (75.9 ppg). The last time SEMO was on the floor, the team surprisingly used a defensive approach, holding Eastern Kentucky to a eager 55 points. The Redhawks limited EKU to a mere 34.7 percent shooting effort from the floor and also forced the team into 19 turnovers. Offensively the squad was paced by Kenard Moore, who scored 17 points in just 21 minutes of action. Calvin Williams added 10 points in 14 minutes on the court, while Brandon Foust tallied just eight points, but grabbed 12 rebounds. Jaycen Herring, who is leading the team with 12.7 ppg, added eight points in the win. Roderick Pearson, the team's second leading scorer (11.4 ppg), chipped in seven points, but also committed a team- high four turnovers.
The Redhawks are not spectacular in any area of the game, but the team is still collecting wins. If there is one thing this team does well it is protecting its home floor. SEMO is currently 6-0 at the Show Me Center and should remain perfect at home after tonight.
