GAME NOTES: Winless on the road in eight tries this season, the Morehead State Eagles take another shot, as they enter the Eblen Center tonight to do battle with the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles in an Ohio Valley Conference showdown. Morehead last played on Thursday night when it bowed to Tennessee State on the road by a score of 59-53. The loss was the second in a row for the team overall and left them just 4-8 on the campaign thus far. As for the Golden Eagles, they played on Saturday and defeated Eastern Kentucky on the road by a score of 75-64. The victory snapped a three-game slide for Tech. With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, Morehead State holds a 66-60 advantage over the Golden Eagles. The teams, which will face off again in just over three weeks at Johnson Arena, split their two meetings a season ago.
The Eagles did themselves in during the first half of last week's game when they shot a miserable 22.7 percent from the field, including 2-of-12 behind the three-point line in the frame. Jamyron Steward tallied a team-best 15 points on 5-of-11 from the floor for the squad, while Maze Stallworth tacked on 12 points as he shot 3-of-7 behind the three-point line. A 60.2 percent shooter from the field, Leon Buchanan is tops on the scoring list for the team with his 13.3 ppg and is also second with close to five and a half rebounds per game. Stallworth and Steward add 12.4 and 11.1 ppg, respectively, to a team that is generating just 61.4 ppg and is allowing opponents to knock down a staggering 42.9 percent behind the three-point line.
Trailing by as many as eight points in the second half, the Golden Eagles put on a mad rush versus Eastern Kentucky, converting a sizzling 65.4 percent from the field to capture the win on the road. Anthony Fisher and Daniel Northern both knocked down 22 points for the program, the latter also clearing a team- best 12 rebounds and rejecting three shots along the way. Rashaud Nixon came off the bench to add 15 points and six boards, followed by Amadi McKenzie with 10 points and eight boards as well. Fisher, who has held at least a share of the scoring lead in each of the last five games, paves the way for the program so far this season with his 16.5 ppg and is also first with 48 assists over 15 games, yet that doesn't make up for his 24.6 percent effort behind the three- point line. McKenzie adds 13.5 ppg and Northern 12.1 ppg to go along with 8.1 rpg. As a team, the Golden Eagles are producing a healthy 74 ppg, but giving up 73.8 ppg at the same time.
The higher-scoring of the programs, Tennessee Tech is also at home tonight, so the advantage has to go to the Golden Eagles.
