GAME NOTES: A set of teams with identical records square off at Matthews Arena today, as the Georgia State Panthers take on the Northeastern Huskies in Colonial Athletic Association play. The Panthers enter the game fresh off their biggest win of the season, as they upended George Mason, 66-64, in league play on Wednesday. It was a surprising win for GSU, which had won just three of its first 11 games before upsetting one of the CAA's elite teams in George Mason. The victory snapped a brief two-game slide as well and evened the team's league record at 1-1. As for Northeastern, it concluded a three-game road swing with a 77-71 setback at Towson on Wednesday. The loss was the team's third in a row, as it dipped to 4-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play. The Huskies now return back home for just the third time, having gone 1-1 thus far. Today's contest marks the fifth all-time meeting between GSU and Northeastern, with the Huskies holding a 3-1 edge in the series.
Leonard Mendez knocked down a 14-foot jumper at the buzzer, lifting GSU to a thrilling 66-64 win over George Mason on Wednesday. Mendez finished the game with 19 points and five boards, as the Panthers overcame a 16-point deficit to stun George Mason. Rashad Chase logged 10 points and five boards for GSU, which shot a solid 55.3 percent from the field. On the season, GSU is hitting on 43.8 percent of its attempts from the floor and that has equated to a scoring average of 65.0 ppg. Mendez leads the squad in scoring at 16.4 ppg and he has also been effective on defense, recording a team-best 18 steals. Chase is next in line with 10.4 ppg and he is the team's top rebounder at 9.1 rpg.
Three-point shooting was the difference in the Huskies' loss on Wednesday, as they went just 3-of-11 from long range compared to a 10-of-25 effort by Towson. Northeastern sank 44.6 percent of its field goal tries, which isn't bad, but it allowed Towson to shoot an even better 50.0 percent from the floor. Manny Adako paced the team in defeat with a career-high 28 points and six boards. Nkem Ojougboh registered a double-double with 15 points and 11 boards, while Eugene Spates chipped in with 13 points. Matt Janning however, was limited to just six points and that was a bit surprising considering he leads the team in scoring this season with an average of 16.3 ppg. Adako ranks second to him with 11.8 ppg and he is shooting a sizzling 62.5 percent from the floor. Ojougboh rounds out the double-figure scorers at 10.3 ppg and he is also pulling down a team-high 8.4 rpg. Overall, the Huskies are producing 66.4 ppg this season, although they are shooting a modest 40.7 percent from the floor.
GSU is coming off a big win, but it hasn't fared well on the road and that gives the edge to Northeastern. Expect the Huskies to control the tempo of the game and do just enough to capture the win today.
