Air Force (8-5) at Utah (8-4)

GAME NOTES: Still waiting for their first true road win of the 2007-08 campaign, the Air Force Falcons go searching in Salt Lake City today where they will open up Mountain West Conference play versus the Utah Runnin' Utes at the Huntsman Center. Since opening the campaign with five straight wins, the Falcons have gone just 3-5 and had their three-game win streak snapped on Sunday in a 78-67 setback to Wake Forest on the road. The squad is now 0-3 in road outings this season, but has managed to split a pair of neutral-site contests. As for the Utes, they too saw their recent three-game win streak halted on New Year's Eve in a narrow 61-59 final versus Gonzaga on the road. The loss dropped the team to 2-3 on the road, but lucky for them they are at home today where they've won all but one of their six opportunities. With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, the Utes hold a commanding 43-12 edge over Air Force, but it was the Falcons who captured the most recent meeting a season ago with a 69-43 victory on Valentine's Day. These two programs will meet once again five weeks from now on the Falcons' home floor.

Tim Anderson rattled in a career-high 30 points on 5-of-9 shooting beyond the arc and 9-of-17 from the floor overall last weekend, and still the Falcons found themselves on the losing end versus Wake Forest as the Demon Deacons avenged their most lopsided non-conference loss in the modern era. Andrew Henke chipped in 10 points as he made 3-of-6 chances behind the three-point line off the bench, while Evan Washington cleared a team-best seven rebounds, but shot only 1-of-4 from the field and accounted for seven of the team's 19 turnovers. Even with his hefty scoring effort last weekend, Anderson still finds his team- leading average at just 14.5 ppg. He's first on the unit with 42 assists and has 26 steals, something that has a huge influence on the team being able to limit opponents to just 56.5 ppg. Henke checks in with 11.8 ppg as the team's top rebounder (4.8 rpg) and one of its best perimeter shooters (.433).

When two starters fail to score a single point, as was the case with Lawrence Borha and Carlon Brown on Monday night, the chances of Utah getting into the win column become that much slimmer. Tyler Kepkay made good on 4-of-8 shots behind the three-point line for the Utes on his way to a team-best 16 points, while Shaun Green and Luke Nevill both tallied 15 and Johnnie Bryant 11 points off the bench. Although the team knocked down 12-of-27 behind the three-point line, it was kept away from three free-throw line for the most part, where the Utes finished only 3-of-6 on the night. Expected to be one of the top performers in the MWC this season, Nevill continues to play inconsistently, in spite of leading the team in both scoring (14.1 ppg) and rebounding (7.1 rpg). He is shooting 48.9 percent from the floor and is averaging barely four trips to the charity stripe per game. Bryant, who is now the sixth man for Utah, provides a huge spark with his 43.6 percent effort out on the perimeter, on his way to 11.7 ppg. One of the top three-point threats in the country last season, Shaun Green (8.1 ppg) isn't getting as many looks at the basket with the emergence of Kepkay (10.6 ppg).

This should be an interesting matchup between one of the best defensive teams in the country and a program that is knocking down better than 50 percent from the field to this point. The key will be the play of Nevill, focusing on how well he should be able to dominate the paint against an undersized Air Force program.
