GAME NOTES: Coming off their biggest win of the season, the San Diego Toreros now invade the Cam Henderson Center, where they will square off against the Marshall Thundering Herd in non-conference play today. The Toreros have been up and down this season, but on Saturday they showed their potential by stunning Kentucky, 81-72, in Lexington. It was the second win in a row by San Diego, which is now just one game under .500 at 7-8. Following today's bout, the Toreros will have a lengthy break before opening a two-game homestand against Cal State Bakersfield on January 9th. As for Marshall, it was at the opposite end of an upset on Saturday, dropping a 72-62 decision to Lipscomb. It was the first loss in seven home games this season for the Herd, which dipped to 6-4 overall. Losing two of its last three games, Marshall will wrap up its current four-game homestand against Winthrop on January 5th. Today's contest represents the first-ever meeting between the Herd and Toreros on the hardwood.
The Toreros knocked down 9-of-16 shots from long distance and they converted an efficient 32-of-36 free-throw attempts, as they upset Kentucky this past weekend. The team also controlled the boards, 34-25, and that includes a 13-7 edge on the offensive glass. Brandon Johnson led the charge with a career-high 27 points and he also turned in eight rebounds and three steals. Devin Ginty made all four of his three-point tries and he finished with 18 points, while Gyno Pomare notched a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. For the season, Johnson has nearly done it all for San Diego, leading the team in scoring (16.9 ppg), assists (3.3 apg) and steals (31). Pomare has provided the muscle down low and he contributes 14.7 ppg and a team-best 7.3 rpg. Overall, the Toreros haven't had a ton of success at the offensive end of the court this season, averaging a modest 64.3 ppg behind 43.8 percent shooting from the field.
The Herd shot a lackluster 35.7 percent from the field, including a poor 8- of-28 showing from long range, as it was upended by Lipscomb on Saturday. The team also struggled at the foul line, where it converted on just 14-of-24 attempts. Mark Dorris paced Marshall in defeat with 15 points and five rebounds, while Markel Humphrey had 13 points and seven boards. Tirrell Baines also got involved, recording a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. For the season, Humphrey has been the Herd's most productive player, as he leads the squad in scoring (16.1 ppg) as well as rebounding (6.1 rpg). Dorris checks in with 13.1 ppg and 4.7 rpg, while Baines adds 12.7 ppg and 6.0 rpg to the mix. As a team, Marshall has done a solid job on offense this season, netting 71.6 ppg on 43.5 percent of its attempts from the floor.
The Toreros are coming off a big win and if they can carry that momentum over to today's game, they should be able to escape with a victory over a Marshall club that was exploited this past weekend.
