GAME NOTES: Instate foes collide in Piscataway today, as the Princeton Tigers clash with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in non-conference play at the Louis Brown Athletic Center. The Tigers were in action in this past Wednesday, but they were unable to put an end to their losing ways in a 65-55 setback to Seton Hall. It was the fourth loss in a row for Princeton following back-to- back wins to open the season. The Tigers have played three neutral court (0-3) games, but this is their first true road game of the season. The team is set to play three straight games on the road and six of its next seven overall. As for Rutgers, it was last in play on Sunday, when it suffered a 65-58 loss to Saint Peter's. The setback was the team's second in three games, dropping it to 4-2 on the season. The Knights however, now return back to the friendly confines of the Louis Brown Athletic Center, where they own a perfect 4-0 mark on the season. As for the all-time series, Princeton holds a 72-41 advantage over Rutgers, but the Knights have won seven of the past eight meetings.
On Wednesday, the Tigers were outscored at the foul line, 13-3, and they also allowed Seton Hall to shoot 53.3 percent from the floor in a 10-point loss. The team did manage to keep the game close by hitting on 44.2 percent of its field goal tries, but it wasn't enough in the end. Kyle Koncz and Noah Savage each tallied 15 points to pace Princeton, while Zach Finley notched a double- double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. On the season, Finley is the team's top scorer (13.7 ppg) as well as rebounder (6.2 rpg), and he is also tops on the club with 12 blocked shots. Lincoln Gunn chips in with 11.2 ppg for the Tigers and he has been responsible for getting Finley the ball with a team-high 3.8 apg to his credit. Overall, Princeton is producing 58.8 ppg, while giving up a slightly higher 66.3 ppg.
In the Knights' last outing, they shot a dismal 32.8 percent from the field, including a poor 2-of-13 showing from long range, as they were defeated by Saint Peter's. It was certainly a poor effort by Rutgers, which also committed 18 turnovers. Corey Chandler guided the team in defeat with 16 points and six steals, while J.R. Inman recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Inman has been a force in the frontcourt for the Knights early on and he is nearly averaging a double-double with team-highs of 16.7 ppg and 9.5 rpg. Chandler ranks second in scoring with 11.0 ppg and he is followed closely by Anthony Farmer, who is chipping in 10.7 ppg. As a whole, Rutgers is putting forth 66.3 ppg, while holding its opponents to 63.7 ppg.
The Knights have been at their best at home this season and behind the support of their fans and a big game from Inman, they should be able to outlast Princeton today.
