Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Antawn Jamison scored a game-high 28 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Washington Wizards over the New Orleans Hornets, 101-84.
DeShawn Stevenson added 16 points and dished out a team-high five assists for the Wizards, who have won four of their last five games. Andray Blatche came off the bench and had 11 points.
"It is a big win for us, especially in the last couple of weeks of not finding a way to pull it off at the end," said Jamison. "We did a great job making them play defense down the stretch. When they had the ball, we did a great job contesting shots at the rim. We did the things you need to do to put yourself in the position to win the game."
Peja Stojakovic scored a team-high 17 points and had seven rebounds for the Hornets, who had a two-game winning streak snapped. Chris Paul added 16 points and dished out a game-high eight assists, while David West helped out with 14 points and nine rebounds in the loss.
"We had our chance to get back into the game," said Paul. "We were trying to be aggressive and go to the free-throw line. They made some big shots and went on a run, right there."
Holding onto a 78-76 lead, Stevenson hit a fadeaway jumper with 8:07 left to play. That sparked a 21-3 run to ice the game. During the run, Stevenson caught fire, scoring 10 points, including two three-pointers.
Trailing 11-6, Jamison hit a driving layup that sparked an 8-0 run to give Washington its first lead of the game. However, the lead didn't last for long as New Orleans took a 20-18 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Leading 26-24, the Wizards started to pull away. Blatche hit two foul shots that sparked a 13-4 run to extend the lead to 11. Washington kept the pressure on and took a 53-40 lead going into the break.
The first shot of the third quarter was made by Jamison. However, the Hornets started chipping away. A Paul driving layup with 5:39 left in the stanza cut the deficit to 62-59. Washington answered right back, going on a 10-2 run that was capped off by a Blatche foul shot with 2:27 left in the quarter. New Orleans kept fighting though, and cut the lead to 74-69, going into the final 12 minutes of play.
