Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Antawn Jamison led a balanced scoring attack with 24 points, as all five starters reached double figures in Washington's 104-93 victory over Memphis at the Verizon Center.
Jamison also had 12 rebounds for the Wizards, who have won three of four. Caron Butler finished with 19 points, seven boards and seven assists, while Brendan Haywood contributed 15 points and nine rebounds in the win. DeShawn Stevenson scored 10 of his 13 points in the first quarter, and Antonio Daniels added 12 points.
"Most of the game went very well," said Washington coach Eddie Jordan. "We had a very good first quarter. We just didn't sustain it. We are happy about the win, but we are not happy about our play. It was a poor performance, but we won. We did enough to win, but we have to get better."
Mike Miller made five three-pointers en route to a 21-point effort for the Grizzlies, who have dropped three of four and eight of their last 10 overall. Juan Carlos Navarro and Rudy Gay scored 14 points apiece, and Kyle Lowry came off the bench to record a double-double with 13 points and a career-high 10 assists.
The Wizards grabbed a quick 7-0 lead on a Haywood running hook shot and led 18-4 after a Jamison finger roll with about four minutes left in the first. In the dying seconds, Stevenson was fouled while attempting a desperation three from half court and sank all three ensuing free throws to give Washington a 30-9 lead at the end of the first.
Washington's defense forced eight Grizzlies turnovers in the opening quarter.
Memphis came out more aggressive and scored six unanswered points to began the second, with Gay suppling all the offense.
Darius Songaila hit a layup with six minutes to play to restore a 20-point advantage, 44-24, for the Wizards, who carried a 59-38 lead into halftime.
Jamison made a pair from the foul line to make it 70-52 a little over four minutes into the third, but the lead dwindled to 74-61 after Miller knocked down a trey. Jamison then hit a jumper and Daniels drained a three to push the lead back to 18, 79-61. Memphis closed the frame on a 10-5 run and found itself down 84-71 heading into the final quarter.
The Grizzlies opened the fourth quarter on a 9-2 spurt, trimming the margin to six, 86-80. Hakim Warrick converted two from the charity stripe to ignite the run, which featured threes from Gay and Miller.
The Wizards responded to the Grizzlies' surge with a 16-1 run to build a 21- point cushion, 102-81, with about four minutes remaining in regulation. Jamison's hook shot capped the flurry and Washington maintained a comfortable cushion for the rest of the game.
