Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Travis Outlaw sank a jumper from the top of the key with nine-tenths of a second left in overtime, sending Portland past Atlanta, 111-109, at Philips Arena.

Outlaw scored eight of his team-high 23 points in overtime for the Trail Blazers, who have won two of three. Brandon Roy picked up 18 points and Sergio Rodriguez contributed 16 off the bench.

Joe Johnson recorded a game-high 37 points for the Hawks, losers in three in a row. Tyronn Lue had 18 points off the bench, while Josh Smith notched 17 points and 17 rebounds in defeat.

"It's tough. With us losing three in a row, this was a game that we really wanted to win," Johnson said. "Knowing that we're about to go on the west coast, this is definitely a tough loss. We have to prepare for Denver, so we got to keep our head up."

Atlanta begins a five-game western swing in the Mile High city on Wednesday.

Johnson's lay-in off a Smith steal gave Atlanta a 105-104 lead 1:37 into overtime, but Roy's putback with 2:10 to go drew Portland into a 107-107 deadlock.

Outlaw hit two free throws, then Marvin Williams sank a pair from the line with 19 seconds left for a 109-109 game. Following the timeout, Outlaw got the ball on the inbound, dribbled inside the three-point line, and let one go for the go-ahead bucket.

Johnson airballed a three at the buzzer and the Blazers picked up their third win in six games on their current seven-game road trip, which ends Wednesday in New Orleans.

"We needed a lift, our bench has been playing well," said Blazers head coach Nate McMillan. "Both Sergio and Frye worked hard the last couple games. We needed to get something from them. I wanted to go back to that rotation and give those guys an opportunity."

Although the Blazers opened up a five-point lead early in the fourth, the Hawks kept pace and crept within one on two occasions, the last time on Johnson's trey for an 86-85 game with 8:14 to play.

Six straight points ending on an Outlaw deuce put Portland ahead 92-85 just before the midway point of the quarter, but Atlanta fought back and cut its deficit to 96-92 when Smith sank one from the line with 3:05 to go.

After Roy's bucket put Portland up by six, free throws from Smith and Johnson got the Hawks within two. Johnson then hit two from the charity stripe to knot the game, 100-100, with 31.9 seconds remaining.

Following a timeout, Roy missed a layup and Al Horford grabbed the rebound with 11.2 seconds left. Johnson missed a fadeaway jumper as the clock wound down and the game required overtime.

Atlanta jumped out to a seven-point lead midway through the first quarter, and extended the advantage to 11 late, before Roy's jumper at the buzzer brought Portland within 27-18.

The Blazers got off to a 13-5 start in the second, creeping back within 32-31 on a Williams jumper. Channing Frye's jumper from the top of the key with 5:50 to play gave Portland a 41-40 edge.

Roy hit one-of-two from the line with seconds to go before the half and Portland led 54-50.

Atlanta opened the second half with a 12-2 run to take a 62-56 lead, highlighted by threes from Acie Law and Johnson. The Blazers turned around and embarked on a 9-3 run to tie, 65-65 on Aldridge's driving hook shot in the paint.

The lead see-sawed between the clubs from that point, but Portland took a 77-76 lead to the fourth thanks to an Outlaw free throw.
