Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Antawn Jamison scored 22 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to record his 22nd double-double of the season, as the Washington Wizards used overtime to defeat the Atlanta Hawks, 102-98, at Philips Arena.
Antonio Daniels added 14 points and seven assists, and his jumper gave the Wizards the lead with 37.5 seconds left in overtime.
Caron Butler chipped in with 21 points and eight rebounds, as the Wizards won for the third time in their last four contests. DeShawn Stevenson added 19 points. Andray Blatche contributed 13 points and tied a career-high in blocks, with five, in the win.
Josh Smith had a game-high 35 points and nine rebounds, as Atlanta lost for the fifth time in six games. Joe Johnson added 23 points and dished out nine assists. Marvin Williams had 16 points and grabbed nine boards.
"Joe Johnson's a talented player, it's kind of hard to stick him, I was just trying to get up under him," Stevenson said. "He's tall, he can handle the ball, he's got a great floater and can shoot the threes."
Al Horford set a career-high with 19 rebounds in the loss.
Johnson made 1-of-2 from the line to tie the game at 94 with just under a minute left.
However, Daniels gave Washington the edge on a jumper. After Atlanta was unable to capitalize with its next possession, as Stevenson blocked a shot from Johnson. The Hawks were forced to foul and Butler hit both shots from the charity stripe to put the Wizards up 98-94.
Atlanta made it a one-possession game on Smith's layup with 7.3 seconds left, but Daniels hit two ensuing foul shots. Williams responded with a jumper, but Daniels hit two free throws to seal Washington's victory.
"It was a disappointing day, we needed this game," Smith said. "We needed this just to be able to get back to .500."
The Wizards concluded the first quarter with an 8-0 run, capped by a Darius Songailia layup with 0.2 seconds left, to head into the second stanza up 23-17.
A Jamison free throw with 13.9 seconds left gave the Wizards a six-point lead, 39-33, heading into their locker room.
The Wizards built an eight-point lead with just under five minutes to go in the third quarter, but Johnson capped an 18-4 run on a three-pointer with 16.6 seconds left. The scoring surge sent Atlanta into the fourth quarter leading 68-62.
Smith had 15 of his 35 points in the third frame.
Blatche's layup 2 1/2 minutes into the fourth quarter tied the game at 70 for the Wizards.
However, Atlanta answered with a 6-0 run, capped by a Johnson reverse layup with 7:54 remaining.
Moments later, the Wizards went on a 6-0 run of their own to tie the game at 82. Butler capped the burst on a jumper with just over 3 1/2 minutes left.
Atlanta took an 87-85 lead on two Williams free throws, the latter coming with a minute and a half left in regulation. Stevenson then tied the game on a pair of free throws with 43.5 ticks on the clock. Neither team could muster any points after that and the squads headed into overtime knotted at 87.
