American League Game Summary - Toronto at Boston, Game One

Final Score: Toronto 8 - Boston 1

Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Travis Snider smacked a three-run homer and drove in five to lead Toronto over Boston, 8-1, in the first contest in a day- night doubleheader from Fenway Park.

Adam Lind, Vernon Wells and Joe Inglett knocked in a run each for the Blue Jays, who have won two of three and rediscovered their offense after mustering only three hits in a shutout loss on Friday.

A.J. Burnett (18-10) was solid in the start, allowing three hits and just one unearned run over six-plus innings for his second consecutive win.

"He pitched a great game for us," said Jays manager Cito Gaston of Burnett. "If he hadn't thrown so many pitches, I probably would have ran him out there one more inning."

Jacoby Ellsbury picked up two hits and Kevin Cash was credited with the lone RBI for the Red Sox, who have lost three of four.

Paul Byrd (11-12) was drilled for 10 hits and five runs over five-plus innings in defeat.

The Jays got to Byrd in their first at-bat, as Inglett led off with a base hit and scored on Wells' two-out double.

Boston was lucky to escape with only one run against in the fourth inning, thanks to some good defense and questionable baserunning by the Jays. Wells doubled with one out, and on Lyle Overbay's base hit, Wells was thrown out trying to reach third. Lind followed with a double to plate Overbay for a 2-0 Toronto lead, but Lind was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a triple.

Snider's three-run blast in the fifth pushed the visitors ahead by five, and they tacked on three more in the sixth on Snider's two-run ground-rule double and an RBI hit from Inglett.

"We really made a kind of mistake to Snider," said Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek of his and Byrd's pitch selection to the budding slugger. "That three- run homer there really hurt us."

The Sox finally got on the board in the seventh courtesy of a sacrifice fly from pinch-hitter Cash off Jesse Carlson.

Brian Tallet closed out the contest for Toronto with two scoreless innings of relief.

Travis had a big day. Rolen had a big day and Vernon, on and on, just a team effort," Gaston added.
