American League Game Summary - Tampa Bay at New York, Game Two

Final Score: Tampa Bay 5 - NY Yankees 6

Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Derek Jeter went 3-for-3 to move three hits behind Lou Gehrig (1,269) for the most all-time at Yankee Stadium, as New York staved off a late rally to edge the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays, 6-5, in the latter half of a double header.

Brett Gardner scored twice and drove in a run for the Yankees, who, despite the win, still only have three victories over their last nine games. Bobby Abreu, Alex Rodriguez and Xavier Nady each drove in a run in the win. Wilson Betemit had a solo homer in the win.

Starter Sidney Ponson lasted just 3 1/3 innings after yielding four runs on six hits to get a no-decision. Damaso Marte (5-3) got the win after throwing a perfect seventh and Mariano Rivera worked around a pair of hits and a run in the ninth to record his 34th save of the year.

"We did a lot of things right tonight," NY manager Joe Girardi said. "Our bullpen came in and did an outstanding job. We were able to shut the door and give us a chance to chip away."

Ben Zobrist went 2-for-4 with a grand slam for the Rays, who saw their three- game win streak come to an end. Evan Longoria had a pinch-hit RBI in the loss.

Starter Matt Garza received a no-decision after lasting five frames and giving up three runs on six hits. J.P. Howell (6-1) took the loss after giving up two runs -- neither of which were earned -- on one hit in 1 2/3 innings of work.

With the loss, the Rays' division lead drops to two games after the Red Sox split a doubleheader with the Blue Jays Saturday.

Down a run with one out in the seventh, Jeter clubbed a single off Howell. Abreu then grounded into what looked like an easy 6-4-3 double play, but Zobrist's throw went into the outfield, allowing Jeter to cross home and Abreu to move to second. Grant Balfour came on in relief, and, after a wild pitch, Nady's single plated Abreu to make it 5-4 in NY's favor.

"I swung the bat well but made a crucial error there in the 7th inning," said Zobrist. "That kind of swung the momentum back in the Yankees' favor."

NY tacked on another run in the eighth inning off Chad Bradford. With one gone, Cody Ransom reached on an infield single but was out as Gardner hit into a fielder's choice. Abreu hit an RBI single two batters later to make it 6-4.

TB attempted a rally in its final at-bat. Gabe Gross opened the frame with a single off Rivera and, two batters later, scored on Longoria's single to right, making it a one-run game. However, Justin Ruggiano grounded to Jeter for the final out.

The Yankees got on the board in the first inning. Gardner led off the frame with a walk and moved to second on Jeter's sac bunt. Abreu then also worked a walk, and both runners advanced on a balk. Alex Rodriguez offered a sac fly to center to put NY ahead 1-0.

The Rays rallied to claim the lead in the fourth. Dioner Navarro got things going with a walk and Gross singled. Fernando Perez put runners on the corners with a fielder's choice. Akinori Iwamura walked to load the bases and Zobrist ended Ponson's start with a grand slam, giving Tampa Bay a 4-1 lead.

Betemit opened the home fourth with a homer to right. Ivan Rodriguez followed with a single, stole second and moved to third on Navarro's throwing error. Gardner added an RBI groundout to get the Yanks within one.
